Can anybody tell me how the heck hatchery fish came to be known here as "brats?" Does it refer only to hatchery steelhead or salmon too? Don't we already have enough goofy names for fish (ie blackmouth, king, spring, tyee, 'nooks, nookies, etc. for chinook)?

I've always assumed that it was because they're pretty much spoon fed from birth until they're released, no predators, etc.

A "brat" is the lowly cousin of the Native Steel. Kinda like the red haired step child thing. Sounds like there's a few of us who have already taken one or more winter fish this year. Ive only managed rainbow colored summer fish so far. Keep fingers crossed for a big run!

The name started out as Donaldson's brats, Dr. Donaldson was instemental in the devloment of the 2 year summers creek fish that we catch today.

Centerpin, do you mean Chambers Creek stock? That was the source for the old Game Department's winter run hatchery program. I've never heard of a "Summer's Creek" stock. Also, I don't recall hearing Donaldson's fish referred to as brats, but that sounds plausible. Thanks.
