Seems like we are due for another new state of the art Tech or Tool for winter steelies. Seems like the last thing was the worm, which we have found many uses for. Before that it was the jig.

Whats next? Ive been trying to think of somthing to invent thats totally new and unique but havent got it yet.

If we have huge #'s of brats this year I think we should have picture contest showing wierdest thing hanging out of a steelies mouth.

Rich, it's going to be tiny bay scallops cured in red Pautzkes Nector. Or cured in a bowl of Guide's Choice brand prawn juice - which I'm sure has the Pro Glo hot cerise coloring in it. Or just as is with a small piece of pink yarn. They stay on the hook pretty well when left raw. They are just a little bigger than the standard corky. Drift fished or float fished, you are in for a goooood time! Let me know if they like em up there.

Ya know, I ate some of those a couple of knights ago. I took a smell and thought to myself " I should try these". I definately will try them now as soon as the water gets fishable agian.

I always thought someone should make a good quality rod that can be changed back and forth between casting and spinning. I don't think it would be to difficult. A dual reel seat, top and bottom. For casting, insert the trigger below and the reel on top. For spinning turn it over and insert the reel on the bottom and a slug, or spacer on top....don't know all the dynamics of it....but sounds possible, but it would have to be a quality rod.

Pink hoochies, That's my guess with a shaved down foam earplug bullet loaded with scent and fished behind a diver. That's my guess.

Randy, though a great idea. A casting/spinning reel probably won't work due to different guide sizes. A spinning rod has a much larger first guide to funnel the line in and then they get progressivly smaller as you go on. Guides for casting rods are all about the same size with the First guide being largest but not disproportianly like on a spinning rod. However, I have seen people fishing casting rods on spinning reels. It just looks odd to me though.

Instead, why don't we just revisit some of the older Hot New Lures/Bait/Techniques that worked so well in the past? I mean, I recall eons ago there was this soft-bodied, yarn-tailed things called Steelie-Stoppers that were so danged deadly on the Clackamas that they were harder than heck to find in the stores.

The things don't just stop working forever, they just likely get overpresented. Seems like some of these Hot New Products are nothing more than a way to separate an angler from his cash.

Corkies with tiny propellers, and a microscopic chip programmed to recognize steelhead, motor over and present themselves lazily in front of a holding fish. Of course with a video feed transmitted through the new generation fishing line to the LCD screen built into the handle of the new casting/spinning rod combo. smile

Sorry Ram, hoochies are old new as Bob stated. But they work!
Some of the guides on the NC started wrapping sandshrimp ,eggs, etc on their steelie plugs last year (maybe before that)
That was interesting laugh
I am thinking or a 1/4oz spinner bait, maybe side drifted.. ?? drifted in colored water? smile
As for the spinning/casting rod... wow, good idea, performance would need to be #1 priority when constructing this new wonder stick.

We fished some 1 3/4" grubs on jig heads last summer.. that was sort of a new twist to an old concept.

The newest Salmon trick this year was either cut Sardines.. (won't go back to Herring) or Shad strips w/ hoochies.. ocean fish love these.. both probably weren't, "New" ideas, but both worked better than old ideas as the time.

cool thread, thanks for letting me play!

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

When I was a kid in the mid seventies, my stepdad and his partner used hoochies extensively. They would stick a corky up in the head for floatation, and fish them on a standard drift rig. They put many big fish in the boat using this technique, and they always had the gear off the rods when we hit the takeout.

I'm going back to this technique in search of bigger nates late in the year. I'd rate their effectiveness right up there with the worm. Since my granddad just gave me a bazillion hoochies from his now retired tackle box, I'm going to put them to use.

I figured Redneck would develop some new technique using baits intended for those "B" fish. He'll be down at barrier dam with some Strike King spinner bait, find some suicidal hatchery fish, and then he'll be all set to become Strike King's western rep. for tackle. Spinner baits, jerk baits, pink worms on a Carolina rig...........the possibilities are endless. eek

I always thought a J-plug or kwick fish with a soft tail section that could be loaded with fresh bait/scent would be a good idea. Of course you would have to run a wire to the back hook for the kwickies. The softness and having holes in the soft material, to secrete scent as the fish bites down would be effective. Also time to bait and rebait would be greatly reduced. smile

how about light sticks, light sticks inserted into spoons, or plugs, or even attached to a jig in some fancy fashion. just a suggestion.

Word of warning if anyone is intrested in the Vortex-sytle jigs. Do not waste your money on these crap...oh boy, did I think I stumbled upon the next greatest thing for steelies as there is a river I fish in the wee hours of the morning before it gets light out. Well..they barely lit up and came on cheap fine wire hooks and were overly expensive. Oh well...

I have managed to get my hands on some glow in the dark chenille and flashabou and will give that stuff a try this winter for some pre-dawn jigs.

A (10½ ft)spinning,baitcasting,and (9½ft) flyrod in 1 ultra-lite fishing rod kit.
Kit contains-(6 pieces)
1)Spining rod top
2)Casting rod top
3)fly rod top
4)bottom section of the rod(upper cork handle w/reelseat)
5)12inch Rear cork handle(screw onto reelseat to covert into 10½ftspinning or take off for 9½ft flyfishing rod)
6)Screw-on trigger(for baitcaster trigger)

I've thought of building a rod kit like this before instead of bringing 2 or 3 rods with me on a fishing trip.
