Little Cleo-

Great name, by the way.

Here is a setup I've been using for two years now, it works wonderful on the Hoh, Bogey, Queets, Quillayute and any other waters where you can swing a fly, actually.

Lamiglas has a new 2-hander designed by JD Love, Mike Maxwell and a few of us crazy *******s that volunteered for this winter fly fishing gig! It's a 13-1/2 foot, 7/8 weight made with a bit more material than the rest of the spey companies to take the abuse we give it during our winters and big Peninsula waters. You can get on through Sportco in Fife and the price is hundreds of dollars less than the competition, no S**tski.

For a reel, you need something fairly large that will balance the rod. I suggest you check out the Okuma 10/11, a big reel with a good star drag, it will hold up and it retails for around 60 bucks.

Fill the reel with 200 yards of 30 pound backing. An ideal line is the RIO Windcutter 8/9 weight (the little heavier line will load the rod quicker, making for easier casts). The line comes with a 15 foot type 6 sink tip (6 inches persecond sink rate) which works noicely under winter conditions and will swim your flies ideally.

Build a 6 foot leader like this: 1 foor of 25 pound Chameleon (it is stiffer than any other line and will help turn over loops and flies), 1 foot of 20 pound Ultragreen, 1 foot of 15 Ultrageen and 3 feet of 12 pound Ultragreen tippet.

Any other questions you might have, feel free to e-mail me at styxriver@juno.com.

Be well,
Bill.
