Spoons are the best way to go for steelies. especially right now. i've been told fish won't chase after ANYTHING when the water gets below 35. yeah, can i hear someone say bull ****so to that! i went out yesterday afternoon and slammed three in an hour. there's nothing like the "wobble...wobble...wobble...BAM! Fish On!

Spoonman, we are not worthy! Are you still doing the counter thing? I enjoy coming down to share a story or two with you! One of our buds walks with a limp FJ...out. P.S. don't tip anybody off about my 4-5 spoon per trip purchases

FJ-
Still at the counter on Fri/Sat. I love hearing all the Cowlitz stories of terror and mayhem from the seething throngs of humanity...scary!
Spoon virgin story for you all...I had a client from Colorado last week on the Bogachiel. A half million boats as usual, fishing is tough...he got his first, secong, third, fourth and fifth steelhead on a 2/5ths silver oval...many other boats had one or none. And you always get the same "deer in the headlights" look from other anglers when you tell them what you've been wailing them on. We fished the flats and other similar areas that literally hundreds of drift fishermen never touched and had a great day, using what no one else was. The Colorado gentleman, not familiar with the ways and means of a crowded river during hatchery brat return, was quite puzzled. "Why", he said, "isn't anyone else using this technique when we are doing so well?"
I just grinned and rowed...
Bill.

Congrats fishkisser! So most of you guys just pitch the spoon/spinner out across the river upstream from your position let it swing through the drift and slowly reel as it's making it's way through, or only start reeling towards the end of the drift? How do most do it? And yes, okay sure, I spooned Monica. And I used my short fat rubber worm wobbler. Geez, knew I was gonna catch ****, especially from gooose. All mighty Zog,
There has been a great return of hatchery brats on one of your favorite suburban streams. Been getting several hookups every trip. Spoons have been the hot ticket in the low cold water! Feel the rhythm in your hand!!!

KB on large and mediuwm rivers you can do the just cast drift and retrieve thing. I'd rec' adding some pumps and drops of your rod tip during the drift and retrieve. On smaller rivers where you can spot holding spots like boulders and slots you can manipulate the spoon so it fishes up to then around then down into suspected holding spots by manipuating rod and line. You can literally disect a hole with a spoon. BTW what did you catch from Monica? :p Gooose

My brother and i had one of our best days ever today fishing with spoons! between the both of us we hooked 22 fish!!! yes, 22! we couldn't believe how good they were hitting the spoons! most of the drift fishermen had a few fish or none at all! i had a friend drift fishing in front of me for a while today, and i hooked 4 behind him in one spot! spoons, in my opinion, are the most effective and cheapest method of steelheading! READ BILL'S BOOK "SPOON FISHING FOR STEELHEAD!" couldn't believe how much it helped improve my spoon fishing!

Hey Spoonman!
I just bought your spoon fishing book today and I'm heading out tomorrow with some new knowledge. Just wanted to say you wrote a great book. My buddy and I have caught a lot of dollies using a jigging technique like you mentioned in your book. We basically cast straight upstream and jig it back if the water isn't flowing too fast. Works wonders on the dollies so I'm going to try it on steelhead.

Well I'm no longer a spoon virgin when it comes to steelhead! Caught an 8lb native today on a Blue Fox 1/2oz gold with orange stripe. Don't know why I picked that spoon to fish with, but it worked.
