I use a $15+- one from Orvis.com. Or get at any good fly shop. It's small and pretty accurate. I've owned a number of fishing thermometers over the years (including electronic depth-sensitive ones) and these little ones seem to be the best. They will break if you drop them, however. But they are only $15+-. Beware, though, that I've had plenty of them be at least a little bit off in their readings. Most seem to be consisant, but a few degrees high or low (my current one is 1.5 degrees to high.) So what I do is compare it's reading (at home) to any other thermometers (fishing or otherwise) I have around the house, such as my home's master gas heating thermometer that's on my wall, and garden thermometers I use for the yard. But you might not want to go to all that trouble. Or just compare it to a buddy's thermometer, once, while on a stream.

Check out your local restaurant supply store and buy a "biotherm". These are used to check food temps. You can even recalibrate them by using boiling water. They are tough to break, in ten years of restaurant work, I only saw one fail, it went into the oven.

Get the low temp version. They have a holder that clips onto your vest, and they cost less than $10.

Who needs to waste the time to bash the poor guy who asked a question when that time could be spent fishing. Geez, what's this board for, helping each other out, or pissin up a rope???? Take a break bud! Maybe when he finds the right thermometer he'll take your temp with it!

Whoah there turbo, I think you better check the temp of that steam that's blowin' out YOUR BUTT first! Maybe a little anal probing would do you some good! j/k (just kidding)-didn't mean that as an insult, I hope you realize. I kinda know the dude that posted the topic and I was just messin' with him. Just a little friendly humor. Jesus, some people just don't get it. Guess I'll have to use the little "j/k" sign like RT suggested, every time I make a joke from now on. You probably had no idea it was a joke. Sorry. OK, going to piss up my tree swing now. laugh

Yup Kromer, you got it. Realize not everyone here knows who is friend and who is foe. Send your slams on personal email and not a BB post that may be taken in the wrong context by other readers.

KB,

I don't know who your joking, but I don't know you. I think that was just your excuse for not being called a basher. Grow-up dude, it's not like it's a "secret" or anything.

To all of you that thought I was serious about KB, I was just kidding. This was kinda my way of getting back at him for something else. No harm, no foul, but I went off the deep end with the BS. Sorry KB.

Anyway, so most any thermometer will work fine, if calibrated?
