How many of you guys tune up your own trolling motors? What do you mount the motor on or in when doing the adjustments and test running?
Seems like my little 6 hp should be pretty simple,, but where to do it? Carb kit, new plugs, clean fuel filter and bowl, voila! Right? did I forget anything? rolleyes

If you tune up your car you can tune up an outboard motor. I leave my motor hanging on the back of the boat. If I need to test fire the motor I have a 40 gallon garbage on wheels filled with water, this works like a champ.
I have a 15hp Yamaha 4 stroke, it is just like a car motor. Just read your manual and it should tell you how to do everything, the basics any way. You might need to buy some tools in odd sizes, I had to buy a 17mm socket for my plugs and a special oil filter wrench.

If you use your motor alot like I do you will save yourself a ton of cash doin' you own tune ups and oil changes. cool

If I was doing the tune up I'd change out the lower unit oil and impeller as well.

A four stroke outbourd motor is just like an automobile but a two stroke is a little differant! On a four stroke you speed up the revs by opening up the carb.On a two stroke you advance the timing so it gets a little complicted.Buy a good shop manual and take a long look and then decide.
whether you do it your self or you take it to a shop I would have the lower unit serviced too.
good luck
