So it was announced today that the sport catch of wild steelhead on the Green River will reach its quota on the January 31st so after that day, the Green River will go to wild steelhead release.
So first of all, the early returning component of the run were totally picked off eventhough those fish are the least healthy of Green River wild steelhead population.
Secondly, say for example the Green River's escapement goal for wild steelhead is 2500 adults (hypothetical scenario) and a return of 3000 was predicted. So the Indians get 250 and the sportsmen get 250. The white's will have caught their 250 and can it can be almost guarenteed the Indians will get their 250...so what does that mean??
If the prediction for returning Green River wild steelhead is correct...there will not be a surplus amount of steelhead to spawn. Hell...if the run was below predicted numbers, it might not even make escapement.
But the good news is (if you are Gibbons and his little MSY minions) there was not a single fish wasted, not a single extra fish was allowed to spawn. Life must be good for you!!
BTW-Here is the article regarding the regulation.
