I am the former operations manger of the construction division for the largest service station matinence company on the west coast...other wise know as a glorified baby sitter

But since I have a problem with office politics I've decided to move back in the field and just run projects,I get to fish more this way too \:D

Oh ya I also build a pretty sweet fishing cataraft frame too.......Os

cat frames don't pay the bills yet,but it sure makes for a good excuse to get out.

College! I am busting my tail trying to obtain a engineering degree. I also work a mundane job (bill payer and education motivation)to pay for college and as mentioned the dreaded B word.

I am still looking for someone to pay my bills. All reasonable offers will be considered. Cash accepted. :p

I shape the future. 2nd year elementary teacher. That's why 99% of the fish I catch are summer runs.....

My Parents!!! \:D Ha ha ha, suckers. ;\)

Oh ya, the car, well... Let's just say that insurance and gas money comes from a boring dead-end summer construction job with minimum wage and terrible hours. \:\( I need a good job, so that I can actually afford to feed myself for a month. And if I think I'm poor now, I can't imagine college.

I work for the same "Major Northwest Aerospace Firm" that several others have referred to. I manage flight simulation projects/labs for the military side. Not good times right now, with lots of layoffs. Been there 16 years and never worked for the Commercial side, but if things get bad enough....

Fisherdan, didn't the big 'B' lose out on some huge military bid? To McDonald's? (McDonald Douglas that is ;\) ). Or was it Lockheed? Seems I recall it was Lockheed a while ago. Dang em. ... [Edit: to Sockeye below - oops, how could I forget the McD merger?!?]

Os, I buy/sell, and rent. All on my wife's money \:D . An ok gig I guess. Currently looking to buy a duplex rental near west side Max lite rail - with the interest rates so low - really low! But look for them to come back up soon. Hope Greenspam and crew waits for a couple more weeks, at least! Geeez, I guess the economy is heating up too much, ay?  Here's an idea, with the Dow back up to 10,5 sell quick before the next bomb goes off?

Went to college for Forestry and somehow along the way got hired as a machinist?

I had to ask them "what's a machinist?" \:D

Now work for a shop making Aerospace parts. Don't work for Boeing, but that's where most of our parts go. Also make alot of Cessna parts too.

Not many jobs out there right now, but it seems like manufacturing has really taken a hit.

Tyler,
If you think school cut's into your fishing time, wait until the real world smacks you around a little.

I work 4-5 10hr days on 2nd shift. Don't see wife or kid during the week, so my weekends are devoted to them. When the weather is warm they love to go along, but not this time of year.

A tip of the hat to you, sinker. I studied geology and ended up a process engineer in electronics manufacturing. Those nat. sci. disciplines are great to study, tough to work in.

The big military contract Boeing lost was the Joint Strike Fighter to Lockheed (Boeing merged with McDonnel Douglas several years ago) last October. That was a lost opportunity of 3-5000 jobs in Puget Sound. Currently Commercial is in the process of laying off 30% (around 30000 jobs I think). Butt pucker times. I console with those of you that have lost your jobs, there are people with 20+ years going out the door.

There is still work around here that will be associated with the JSF. There's enough aerospace shops that there will be some jobs directly related to it.
It sounded like a really big deal at the time, but if you look at how many years all that money was spread over it didn't amount to much.
Everyone at work is hoping the 767 tanker contract will save the day. I'd guess since the gov't is involved it will be several years before they even start production and who knows how long they will drag it out.

Commercial is where it's at. Unfortunately, that isn't a good biz to be in right now. I think this slowdown was eventually going to take place pretty soon, Sept. 11th just sped it up.
