I was driving up the upper Hoh road last Saturday with this song just pounding through the speakers in my rig. The song Is by an outstanding, obscure Swedish hard rock/heavy metal band called Spiritual Beggars. I found myself singing alternative lyrics to the song in my head on one of the most glorious (and if you've read my other posts, scary)Hoh river mornings of all time, for some reason I feel compelled to post them. Actually if I could just introduce this band to one person who thinks they are as awesome as I do (well, one more person )it will be worth all the tomatoes in the world about to be thrown my way...if you'd like me to Email or IM the actual song to you I'd be happy to, I only changed a few key words... Never see the sun above I dig in the oars Sunshine washes the gray away It kissed my brain Mountains make me lose my breath I feel alive Now I feel humility and at peace in the mind Now the lungs of the universe Are the lungs of my soul I can feel it I can sense it Hallelujah Fish the Hoh Monday morning you enter hell Not me I'm not a fool, I work like a wh*** Haven't fished the Hoh Monday morning I open an eye and lay back in bed arms so heavy I can't get up Friday will come Now the lungs of the universe Are the lungs of my soul I can feel it I can sense it Hallelujah Fish the Hoh Hallelujah Fish the Hoh!!

A prophet is never appreciated in his own time...
I'll pass on buying the record, but bring it along if we ever fish together, and we'll pop it in.

So can I just pick this CD up at the mall? Besides that one song, are there at least 2 other 'good' songs? I don't justify spending $18 on one song. Unless of course, it is a killer song. Not many times has this happened. I'll check them out though. I blast Disturbed, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Jane's Addiction, Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, etc. all the time. 'neck

Sorry, haven't figured out how to paste in links yet: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B...2049337-7178358 You won't find this in the store, worth every second of the wait!! Every song is strong, I haven't been excited about a band to the extent that I am excited about this one since I heard "Breakin' the Law" for the first time!!

I always have the speakers at max when the beat up boat follows. Buzzo, of course, is lead guitar of the Melvins, another obscure band who scoffed at any capitalistic chance for radio notoriety. Also, Slipknot, Slayer, Machine Head, Fear Factory, Obituary, Primus, Sepultura, Soul Fly (tribal anadromous rhythms mixed with smash riff), but also some NOFX, Gas Huffer, and Social Distortion. Of course, nothing beats Jimi at Winterland or Carlos in Japan, 1974 (Lotus).

I was kinda expecting George Thoroughgood and a rewrite to "I drink alone". I'll leave that up to someone else.

I usually make up all new lyrics to fit the fishing situation at the time. Sometimes its an upbeat rock tune, others its a sad country song... but it is all original Craven

Anyone who winds up checking out Spiritual Beggars, post a short review?
I lost my appetite for new music completely about ten years ago, right about the time Seattle bands were oversaturating the music scene. Then I discovered this relatively obscure band Kyuss, who I remember hearing about, remember hearing about the shows they played in Seattle but never went to because I had written them off as being a 'hair band with the last name of the singer' type band (see Winger)....
Kyuss shred and nobody noticed. If you are in to Sabbath type heavy rock or just good hard driving music then check out the cool, cheap three CD set from Amazon (not a sales pitch, you can find the same deal from other internet CD stores)...
Anyway...I am a huge Sabbath fan and there have been all kinds of retro Sabbath type bands coming out in the last few years, here are my favorites: Kyuss, Spiritual Beggars, Electric Wizard, sheavy, Grand Magus, The Quill, Big Elf (Beatles meet Sabbath, really cool!), Church of Misery
If you check any of these out please post,
ROCKFISH,
I checked out the Turbonegro you mentioned, they're pretty damn cool even though I am not much of a punk (some might argue otherwise). Try checking out the Hellacopters, Gluecifer and Entombed for a little more northern European punk flavor...

I like my metal fast and tight, like the shine of a hot native fish taking line in clear water, like the raw beauty of a metallic bikini on a woman in the sun, and the music of the speed metal band Testament. You might look at the song "Disciples of the Watch" and notice the potential for changing the words to fit a fish theme, Disciples of the Rod!

Haha...I love Testament...really sad about Chuck's cancer though...
How about "Fishing Gods" to the tune of Metal Gods...
Wielding the rod comes the one combination that always seems certain to bring down the rodtip for me etc....

Remember, I'm an old fogie....
When you are in my truck on the way to the river, be ready for Judas Priest (STILL the undisputed kings of metal!), Quiet Riot, Queensryche, Black Sabbath, Scorpions, The Who and of course, Zepplin. New stuff? Hmmm...would have to be Disturbed and Creed.
Wearing my concert T-shirt from Zepplin in the Kingdome, 1977, of course.

You Zeppelin - AC/DC era fans are missing the boat if you fail to check out Spiritual Beggars...they are a new band yes but with a serious, respectful nod to the old school...this post will have been for naught if I can't convince someone to give these guys the attention they deserve...Shoot me an Email and I will send you a Sample song and tell you anything you want to know about them or any of the other retro-rock bands proliferating the new music scene...
Hey Steel-addicted, help me out here would ya?

You guys are giving me some serious flashbacks! Nothing like partying all night, waking up early to go fishing and blasting some Slayer or Pantera to get the blood and aggression going . Get some pretty interesting looks at the boat ramp for a short-haired older guy I do! Downriggin'

Warm summer evening...
2 fish day...
Sitting by the fire with girlfriend camped at the dead end road...
Fog rising off the river...
Electric Wizard's "Vinum Sabbathi" blasting out of the truck speakers and echoing down the valley...
Full moon...

riverdog -
Up above is a link to the Amazon web page where you can buy the CD. Never seen it in a store, good luck. The newest CD is Ad Astra, very solid but unlike alot of bands they were already professionals by the time they got together, so their material is very, very strong on both their first CD, Another Way To Shine and their second, Mantra III. Start with Ad Astra and work your backwards...
We pulled alot of plugs this weekend so my Heavy Metal theme song for our most recent trip is:
"The Fish Are Backing Down" to the tune of Thin Lizzy's 'The Boys Are Back In Town"...
If some one presses me I will rewrite the whole thing....
An all BB fish parody rock band would be a great gag (but for an admittedly small audience)...I play the drums, guitar and sing (well, that ones debatable)...anyone else have some skills??

Funny how you can express your opinion about something as devisive as musical interests and not get slammed, but the second you question the integrity of a product that just happens to sponsor this board, you get slammed by the good 'ol boys. I wonder how fast I would last if I posted a Cuntry sucks thread? I know a lot of the guys who have posted on this thread thought I was dead wrong on the dead issue and I just wanted to thank you guys for refraining from slamming me.
Probably more of a commentary on the Metal brotherhood than anything else...
Anyway I wanted to pass on a couple more musical suggestions, stuff I like to listen to on my way to and from the boat launch:
Opeth - No band has ever affected me like these guys have. I used to despise the distorted death Metal vocal style and shied away from bands with that approach. I picked up the CD "My Arms, Your Hearse" and was literally in tears (OK, close to tears)at the beauty of the record in spite of the distorted vocals. Plus, half of the vocals are sung clean and the singer has an incredible voice. I have heard people compare this band to Rush, very jazzy, ambient at times but Heavy as F***...Best CD to start with "Still Life"...good introductory song, "Face of Melinda" or "Serenity Painted Death"...
In Flames - Coming to Seattle April 27th and Portland the 26th. Vocals a little screechy but they fit the music so well. If you like the classics, Maiden, Priest etc. and Metal with melody and musicianship you have to check these guys out too...CD - Jester Race Song - The Jesters Dance
Electric Wizard - With a name like that you know they have to be heavily influenced by Sabbath. Slow, Heavy Heavy Heavy, stoned and LOUD!!!!!
If you like Pink Floyd try: Anathema, depressed British band, they must have run out of Heroin or some thing.
If you like more commercial stuff try:
Hammerfall, Iced Earth, Sentenced, Blind Guardian...man the whole Metal thing is starting to happen in a big way again! There are so many cool NEW bands producing terrific music. If you are stuck listening to the same 25 CD's that are twenty years old try some of this stuff out, you won't regret it. If you have Microsoft messenger add stlhdh2o to your buddy list and I will send you anything you ask for

Awwww, fer cryin' out loud.......
I'm still replacing vinyl with digital, I don't have time or patience to deal with new music.
Problem is, it just wasn't engineered as well as some of the new stuff.
I've worked for a pro-audio place for 2.5 years, and it drove me to pick up a Strat and try and figure out how to play it. Criminy, and I had to pick SRV to wanna emulate. It'll be 20 years before I'm happy with the way I play.
To pull from another thread, I play guitar like I fish....very poorly, but with a lot of enthusiasm.
(I'm laughing at my own joke, and cryin' about it's truth)

Hey Skywalker,
Computers are digital so you are already 99 percent of the way there...
All you need is some speakers on your computer and you are all set....
Check out Krome Brite's Spiritual Beggars testimonial at the bottom of page one....
I'm not kidding and I won't shut up (as you may have already guessed), they kick a**!!!!

Easy there Kromy...
Hey Rockfish,
Not gonna get all defensive, I'll just leave it at...NOT!!
Buttrock started when David Lee Roth rubbed the microphone stand on his ass in the video for jump and ended when people were misled into believing that Curt Cobain was some sort of musical genius. None of the music discussed here comes from that era.
Main purpose of this post: To inform people who have given up on new music that there is still some being made that doesn't suck, encouraging them to try something they wouldn't otherwise give the time of day to.
Call it a gift...you'll never get to experience the joy of opening the gift until you go check some of this stuff out....
Right Kromy, SA....?
