I've golfed with Jeffhead and Osprey together. Jeff and I golfed (kinda) while Os just rolled his ball all the way down the fairways. Jeff is good. I'm pretty fair at it (usually low 80's). And I've golfed a couple times with Spooled. ... I've read that our Bob golfs, and so does Silver Hilton and others. How many of you guys golf occasionally or more? It's a close second to fishing for an outdoor recreation sport for me. Usually good scenery, and fun with friends. It's a heck of a challenge too. If there are enough of us, maybe we should consider a late spring or summer Golfcartilla? Would be a lot of fun, with possible BBQ and beverages. What are some good centrally located courses? One that comes to mind is the Lewis River Golf Course. I've played it and it's a good one. It would also allow for some morning summer steelhead fishing along with afternoon golfing. Other courses? Thanks guys.

Whoa....I'm feeling a warm fuzzy here... Before I found fishing, my wife could find me on one of the puget sound region golf courses on any given weekend. Good (Great) neutral sites...Vickwood/Meriwood in Lacey, Druids Glen in Kent, Gold Mountain in Bremerton... Just say the word. With river closures and blackmouth slow, it sounds great! My wife would love it if I came home smelling like something other than herring/shrimp/roe. I would love to hook up with some board members.

I was pretty fanatical about golfing as a kid and got back into it in my 20's untill a slipped disc put the kabash on my tour dreams (that is all they were). Now fishing takes up more of my free time then golf. I have played Lewis River also and remember liking it. I would be up for a shot to Druids Glenn though, having never played there. What about the golf and casting club? Never been, but, I hear they stock some ponds to fish and will rent you rods and such, seems like a natural for this board. They are on Kitsap penn. somewhere.

I'm just as much a golf freak as I am a fishing fool. If I'm not fish'n, I'm golf'n. Trophy Lake is a very nice track and of course there's some fishing there too. It's a pay to fish deal and if I remember correctly it's a little spendy. Another track that everyone should try is Washington National. Awesome course but a little spendy. I think they have a special going right now for 60 bucks....carts included. But for my money Gold Mountain-Olympic Course is the way to go. Price is right and the course is great.

Great topic!
Wow, he(LL) yeah I golf, not great at it of course but can you really find a more challenging sport? And what other sport can you drink beer, DRIVE a vehicle and swing metal things for four hours? My theory on golfing fun: 1 beer a hole! Now I tried this theory once while deployed to the Sinai peninsula in Egypt. The course was built by the Prince's son, and had the only grass for 200 miles around. Lots of sand traps, can you imagine, ha ha. Anyway, we (young and dumb army guys) got the cart stuck in a sand trap (wow, how did that happen?) on about the 14th hole and were too inebriated to get our clubs, cooler and butts back to the clubhouse. The sidikis (Egyptian for frind) just laughed and policed us up and took us back to the base.
Now before you all flame me and take me off the Golf/Floatilla #1 list, I can say that I am much more mature now, ya right. Really though that is a great idea, the Golf/Floatilla thing I mean, and I can offer up some south puget sound courses and maybe get a good group deal at Fort Lewis or McChord AFB Great topic!

Cant drink enough beer to lower my handicap, but I like to scare the hell out of the ball and other golfers. Count me in on that combo day or weekend. About an 18 handicap.

Fine idea RT! I'll generally be a few strokes either side of 80. But, mainly I get off on out-driving guys twenty years younger than me. Fort Lewis is an excellent layout. Played there with a retired buddy a few times like it.
Keep your head down.

I've been fishing at this board for a year now. Feel like I know many of ya without ever meeting ya (except Osprey when I got some of his jigs). Fishing & golf = 2 out of 3 necessities of life! Well I guess the other one isn't a necessity, but still puts a smile on my face! Golfatilla sounds like a great idea, but after springers done? By the way, anyone with under a 12 handicap is spending too much time golfing & not enough time fishing...

I thought there would be a bunch of golfers among members here. It wouldn't be hard to get several foursomes to do an informal fishing BB 18 hole tourney; when better weather is more likely. As good as it sounds to combine fishing and golf the same day (as Jeff, Os, and I did) I figure it would likely be best to have just a golf day. There's travel time, warmup on the driving range/putting green, 18 holes of golf for an untold number of foursomes, and a bit of clubhouse eats/drinks/smack talkin to do afterward . While the Lewis R. course would be good, more of you guys live closer to Puget Sound, so the Ft. Lewis Golf Course and the Gold Mt. Olympic (where's that?) courses sound like good prospects to have an event. I know Jeff would like the Ft. Lewis course; working right nearby. He's said it's a very good course; we're planning to golf that together sometime. If Haverod' can get a group discount on that one, we can name an event and call it a website fishing/golf club organized tourney to qualify for the better rates. Other courses offer that for company tourneys and such. You guys up north there can organize this thing as the dryer weather approaches; using the BBs. I know myself and some Oreos will drive up to the Olympia area. And the Lewis R. course near Woodland is a relatively short distance for most people if lots of Oreos also respond ahead of time. Keep in mind when talking to any courses that a number of guys with bum knees or feet or whatever would need power carts available. It would be a heck of a lot of fun. It's impossible to go scoreless in a golf event. (shut up Dan ) Some event name candidates: - Golftilla - Golfcartilla - Golfthrilla (could be) - Fishweb Hack's Championship - Team Piscatorial vs Team Ifish Golf Challenge? - Others?

Golfing seems to get in the way of fishing. Cuz if I am playing good golf I ussually play insead of fishing. I only golf once in a while now. I have my priorities straight now. My 16 year old Brother is a scratch handicap. He is awsome. He is getting tons of letters from colleges. Even from Oregon I am trying to warn him about you guys down there but he isn't listening. He might become a Duck. How sad. later guys.

I'll give you guys a hint at just how bad I golf. I played on a co-ed team last September in a charity golf event. It was a 'best ball' event, and it was a struggle for me to use 2 drives that were mine on the front 9. I officially gave up woods, and switched to irons. After that, I was keeping up with everyone.
Once I get within 100 yards, I'm on fire, but put a lot of green in front of me, and I'm a hack. If you're a bettin' man, pay me and I'll play for the other team.

How about a golf joke for you golfers:
---
Toward the end of the golf course, Harry somehow managed to hit his ball into the woods finding it in a patch of pretty yellow buttercups.
Trying to get his ball back in play, he ended up thrashing just about every buttercup in the patch.
All of a sudden . . .POOF! In a flash and puff of smoke, a little old woman appeared.
She said, "I'm Mother Nature! Do you know how long it took me to make those buttercups? Just for that, you won't have any butter for your popcorn the rest of your life; better still; you won't have any butter for your toast for the rest of your life....as a matter of fact, you won't have any butter for anything the rest of your life!"
THEN POOF!....she was gone.
After Harry got a hold of himself, he hollered for his friend, Fred.
"Fred, where are you?" Fred yells back, "I'm over here, in the pussywillows."
Harry yells back......
"DON'T SWING FRED!!!" "For God sake, DON'T SWING!!"

Once read a golf tips column where someone asked the pro, "What causes a slice?" His reply was, "Too much fishing!" I sold my golf clubs after reading that bit of advice.
Got back to the game two years ago. I don't have an established handicap, but the following incidents pretty much reveal my skill level. Once, I got a birdie on the first hole at Lake Wilderness. It was a humane kill; the robin never knew what hit him. The best score I've ever had for nine holes was a 36. That day, a junior high girl had joined me on the first tee, and I was motivated to show her how the game was played. She shot a 34. Golf is a humbling game!

Aaaaaahhhhh, The day the now infamous emu caper (hopin' I wouldn't bring that up eh RT?!?!? ) started!!! Fishin' for summer steelies in the morning and 18 holes in the afternoon, what a great combination!!! That was a beautiful mid-week July day. We played Newaukim Valley that day, it is pretty wide open but a nice course. The Ft. Lewis course is a great layout and it is now open to the public but I'm not sure what would be decent close fishin' that time of year. Never played Lewis River, that would be a good middle ground for the Oreo's and Wassie's to meet up at. If we did this in the summer I think either the Lewis or the Cow for fish and either Lewis River or Newaukum in Chehalis or Riverside in Centraila would be good choices for golf. Fishin' in the morn and the loud cry of "Oh s**t....FORE!!! in the afternoon would be a blast. Sounds like a great day, count me in. My Ping's also collected a lot of dust last year and I had made a promise to myself to play more this summer. Good luck and tight lines, Jeff

I took up golf some years ago so I could spend some time with my Dad ( he does not fish).. Sort of like smoking.. before you know it your hooked. I can shoot anywhere from low 80's to high 90's. I have a 16 handy cap right now. One thing I have found to be a small advantage with being a golfer. It used to be that my family would try and get me a present it would be fishing related. I would always get some crap like a package of bobbers, a little mepps spinner and a stringer (remember those???)Anyway, now they just pick me up a dozen Strata's and I am happy as can be.. One of my buddies says he golfs so he can have a reason to hate himself.

This isn't meant as an insult, but this thread reminds me of my great uncle, who passed away in 1989. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, but also fairly well-read.
Anytime we drove by a golf course, he would laugh and talk about acquaintances who would hit the green regularly. "Golf is for people who don't know how to masturbate," he would say, and laugh.
Everytime I drive by a golf course, I think about that.

Oops . . . too quick on the trigger! I used to golf a lot. Played in local events, etc. Always bummed cause I didn't get more chance to fish. Had between a 3 and 5 handicap. Now I golf in the single digits (less than 10 times a year). Don't know what to expect with the sticks anymore . . . but I do get to fish a LOT more. :p Gold Mountain (either course) or Vicwood would be good centrally located courses that cater to all levels of golfers. I'd definitely be up for a little Flog, 'specially when you mix it with fishing! Brian

I was on my high school varsity golf squad. Does that count for anything?
Fortunately for me, I threw away my clubs a long time ago and have not been dumb enough to buy new ones. I'd rather spend the thousands of dollars and get a drift boat these days.
How can such a silly game piss off so many people?

I golf, but I can't for the life of me figure out why. If I'd stunk at anything else for as long as I've stunk at golf, I would have given it up years ago.
Golf is a four letter word. They call it golf because "sh!t" was already taken.

I will look into the Fort Lewis course for us all. That's south of Tacoma for all you westsiders. Anyone golf Whipering Firs at McChord AFB? That is also a nice course. I think this would be a great idea.
RT: What time frame are we looking at? Format? Est. number of players? Sign up roster in e mail form maybe? Prizes? Snacks/beverages/barbecue to follow? Let me know, so I can approach the guys on the commitee at Fort Lewis. I could get a picnic spot on Fort Lewis for a possible barbecue afterwards. Let me know.
ET: I'll golf with anyone, why? Because I know there isn't much chance of me beating ya.

All this interest is great! Haverod' (give us your first name), if you will be the event organizer, I will be your assistant (I've organized a few tennis and raquetball tournaments when I was the manager of Beavertons's Western Athletic Club for a few years). I suggest targeting the first half of June, after the springer fishing has tapered off and before the kids get out of school and families take off on vacation. That will also give time for guys to plan ahead, and to practice some. I agree that 4 man teams in a best ball scramble format is the way to go. That's what we do in the Portland State Coach's Open fund raiser tourney's. Another thing to do is get a course reserved at a certain time for a "shotgun start", for a certain number of entered and pre-paid teams. Likely, 18 teams is easily reachable, which would work well for a shotgun start (with all teams sent to each of the 18 holes, and starting at the same designated time, along with a starting pistol blast optional). This takes much less overall time than sending out teams 12 minutes apart, and there's no waiting around for others to finish afterward. 18 X 4 equals 76 golfers - and if there's more who want to join in, many courses will allow 5 man teams because the best ball and SG start goes along at a good clip; which would allow up to 96 golfers. With 4 man teams, they must use at least 3 of each member's drives off the tee. If you have an 'ace' on your team you could then use 9 of his drives. After the tee shots, each successive shot is taken by all team members from the spot where the best ball landed of the 4 (or 5) guys. Even with puts. That makes for very good team scores, and a load of fun (with no pressure on those whose games are 'off' that day). Guys can get their own 4 man teams together to enter via a set up entry thread on here, and/or via e-mail to Haverod' and I; when a June weekend date gets picked and a course chosen and reserved. For those without enough golfing partners we can put them together in 4 man teams. Anyone interested that can get some sponsor prizes for the top 3 or 4 finishing team scores would be a nice bonus, but not necessary. There will be posted team bragging rights I'm sure . This is a can't miss fun format. At the PSU alumni golf tourneys, the more the beer takes affect during the round, the more you start hearing "FORE" around the course. BBQ'd hamburgers and beverages can be set up for afterward. If we pick about a noon time start, those that want to fish for a while ahead of the tourney will have some time to do so. We need more feedback about interest, and prefered courses and dates. How does a Saturday or Sunday on June 1 or 2, June 8 or 9, or June 15 or 16 sound? We need an event name too. Post your feedback. Thanks guys. RT

There was a day I played lots of golf. 100+ rounds a year. Not being gifted with the world's best coordination, I could only manage to break into single digit handicaps at times despite how much I played and practiced. Sold golf clubs in college and that job allowed me to start guiding as I got lots of time off in the winter to run trips and worked steady selling clubs in the summer months. My one-and-only ace on number 3 at Harbor Pointe (lived on #6 teebox for a couple of years) ... I don't get to play much anymore, but still enjoy it (most of the time ) when I do. Alaska summer golf is strange ... you can hit the ball a mile, but the greens suck, the brush alongside fairways is the biggest ball-eating-mess you've ever seen. Always give moose the right-of-way Wish I could partake in a two-sport event, but alas, I'll be up north working away

OK RT: Well youve found lots of golf buddies;I played my first game of 2002 today My putting stunk;but here is the deal. Each player is only allowed to carry his putter. All other shots are played with a baitrod, spinning reel,1/2oz lead and a white fly. You can make as many casts as you wish. Each successive cast is made from the place at which your fly lands on the previous cast. The format is a 4 fly (ball) all players from scratch. once your fly lands on the green you must put from the point where the fly fisrst landed on the green. There is a bait bann on all par5 holes.

All this talk of golf is making me sort of nostalgic of bushwacking days chasing after errant golf balls...most of which I could never find. I did have some fun though...remember golfing at the course up on Kodiak. It ran right along the Buskin River, signs everywhere told you to let the bears play through, and they were serious. Now all I need to do is dig out my golf clubs, hit a bucket of balls at the range, realize how much I suck and throw the clubs back into storage...that way I will not show up at the event and make a total fool of myself.

That's a cool way to both cast and golf, Coot. That would be a fun deal. I've also heard of Frizbee golf too - where they throw it until reaching the green. But I think I will stick to hitting Titlist HPs. By the way, I got e-mail from Haverod' .... from overseas. Tour of duty for a couple more months, before getting back to Ft. Lewis. So, I will run this thread again about early May - a month or so before a possible June website BB tourney - and if there's enough interest, and I can get one or two of you Washington golfers to help me, we can put on a fun little tourney and get together; morning fishing optional. Seems like can't miss fun. Continue with any feedback and ideas you have. Steve

I play to about a 5. I play a lot of tournys throughout the summer months, lots of team format type stuff, scrambles, best ball, chapman etc. I belong to our lacal CC and play in its men's league, and partner scramble with the little lady on Thursday nights. I too am a golf junky, will play 4-7 days a week April-Sept.

I have been accused of doing a lot of silly things, addiction to fishing being one of them, but never golf!

I love the game of golf. I play except when it snows or is flooding!!! I was fortunate to play my first under par round last summer (-1). The closest I have come to that previously was 2 over(+2). I would be interested in playing in some local get togethers if there were to be some put together. JB
