Where is the best place to catch the springers and what shoul I use

Info can be kind of tough to come by as rookie to the board, see some of the 'info.' posts trickling their way down the board.

If you want info on Springers there is alot of stuff to be found using the 'search' function...upper right hand side of every page, right under the ads. Go there and type Springers in to the search box...bam!!...more info than you could possibly read in one sitting on Springers.

If you want to see something hilarious type 'hooks' in to the search engine...

If you try all the main rivers using all the different gear out there you might catch one before some of the people on this board. If you do that you could tell all of us the hot spot and what you caught it on. Then you would be my hero.

Best way to figure it out is to go out to the river and measure the OFI. What is the OFI, you ask? Why, it's the Old Fahrt Index, of course, which is the number of fisherfolk over the age of 45 times their average age, times the average age of their boats, divided by the average horsepower of the boats. Look for where the OFI is highest, and fish there. Watch where they fish, and what they do. Do it.

Seriously, in the springer fishery, look for the crowds. There aren't a lot of secrets about where the fish are.

Took me a long time to realize that it isn't particularly what's on the end of my line that matters. Little things like the depth, the speed, the action of the lure, bank structure, and whether I washed my hands were very important.

Lest you think I'm joking about the last one, let me assure you that I'm not. I keep a bottle of dish detergent in the boat to wash my hands before I touch a lure or bait. I had a lesson years back where I was trying to show a guy how to catch walleye, in his boat. It being his boat, all of my stuff wasn't there, including the soap, so I couldn't wash my hands. He caught 5 fish, I couldn't buy a bite. We went in to get some lunch, and I washed my hands at the quick mart. We went back out, and it was three for me to one for him.

So, now you all know for sure what you formerely only expected - I smell bad.

Hey Andrew, now that you know about washing your hands, here's another little secret. Use toilet paper instead of your hands. Problem solved.

Predator, whatchu talking about? Wasting perfectly good paper on the toilet? Next thing, you'll be telling me you got the privy actually inside the house. Dis-gustin'.

Oh, and on the soap, I use lemon joy. You can spend three times the money on No-scent soap at the tackle store, but any good dish detergent works perfectly well.

I wash my hands in herring guts first, then in chinook slime right after

Chinook slime

Egg slime

Soap, and repeats.

etc, until 5:00pm or the beer runs out.
