I'm surprised it hasn't made it over here yet, as it's been on IFish for a couple of days, but here it is. http://www.petitiononline.com/rvkptaex/petition.html It's a petition to revoke PETA's non-profit status, alleging that their association with and funding of known criminals violates the tax codes that control non-profit corporations. Give it a read and sign it. It takes all of 45 seconds. Fish on... Todd.

Thanks for beating me to the punch, Todd. I voted earlier today over at IFISH (please don't ban me) and was 7600 something another. I was thinking the same exact thing. Why the hell didn't this make it over here before now? Now that IT is here, please take the time to fight global terrorism by clicking the link. I think 45 seconds is pushing it. More like 20 seconds. So get to signing, people. Your grandkids will thank you.

Todd, Are you sure what you are asking us to do? There are ways that one can get around a tax status number!
When I developed the Friends of the Cowlitz tax structure for their 501-C3 status rating, we were also allowed to operate our main organization under the 501-C4 status. Do you know if PETA has done the same?

Bob, I think Todd just did the board a favor by copying and pasting the link here. I will find out about their tax status hopefully by tomorrow evening and shed some light. I hope someone from PETA sends out some kind of hatemail to my email address. Let's just say they haven't seen 'hardcore' yet.

Duh, don't it always? :p Now the question is, does the hardcore include more donkey or more love?

Bob,
The main difference between C3 and C4 is the amount of time and money you can spend on lobbying or backing specific candidates in elections.
Both, however, prohibit using donations under your 501 status to commit crimes or to fund criminals.
In this case it looks like PETA has kicked in a few bucks to some shady characters, so the petition is intended to get their status dumped for that.
Fish on...
Todd.

Todd, I agree with you, but the "facts" are not all in yet, or are they? Shouldn't we wait until those facts are all in before we string the rope?
I have no problem building the platform to do it, but I wouldn't put it around their neck until all the facts are in, would you?

Hard to believe that I look at this thread and find CowlitzFM the "voice of reason" and Todd to be out in left field. But - so it goes. CF, you are right, nothing has been proven, certainly there are allegations, but if allegations were all that was needed to materially alter the running of an organization, we would be in deep doo. Anybody can make allegations, people with a particular agenda make allegations more often than others and to bring a petition into the emotionally charged waters of PETA and their supporters and detractors does not make sense to me. Relax, guys...
Here is what the petition is asking for:
...
We would like the IRS to please launch a review of Peta's tax exempt status, and become familiarized with the organization.
...
The writer of the petition made some allegations, and is asking the IRS to investigate them. If the IRS finds them to be true, the petition is asking them to revoke their 501 status.
They're not creating any facts, nor are they asking the IRS to rely on their version of the facts. They're asking the IRS to investigate the allegations and decide what the facts are and how they may affect PETA's status.
Fish on...
Todd.

Todd - I've now got a better understanding, however I know that there are Congressional investigations ongoing regarding this. My expectation is that the IRS will pay more attention to the results of those investigations than this petition. I would be interested to know who the group is that is behind this petition. I know that there are numerous groups on the right that get apoplectic over PETA (probably on the left too - I don't believe PETA has done the Carnegie course on winning friends and influencing people!!)

Eddie,
If Congress is indeed investigating, I suspect that you're right that it would get some attention at the IRS.
I'm not sure who the folks are behind the petition, but I do remember that the link to them and their agenda is on the petition itself.
Fish on...
Todd.

One of 16051. PETA and other eco-extremist organizations like them exist for one reason. TO PISS ME OFF Who the hell are these freaks to tell me what to do. If they can be hit in the wallet by the revocation of thier tax exempt status, maybe, just maybe they will shut the hell up and go away. As you can see, I have very little tolerance for poeple who seek to impose their ideals onto me and others by force of law. Maybe if the name they chose for themselves wasn't just pure B.S. They might have a little credibility with the mainstream. grumpy
