I am considering a 5 day trip to a Tahsis resort in July. Any fellow fishers ever experienced this fishery? Thanks.

great choice. the dollar goes a long way, scenery is awesome. fishing is great, and the new island freeway makes the drive a snap. once you get to gold river, you have an hour drive on a dirt road if you are driving.its a very small town, with few ammenities.

Check the regs. I went to Critter Cove for a week last year. Most of Nootka itself was closed except for one area where you could keep a King greater than 77cm. The ocean was open but it blew most of the time we were there. Let me tell you its allot of fun catching ings in the 20-30 popund range but it would be nice to bring one home. Wow is the scenery awsome though. It was worth it. I would enjoy it more if I had brought home some fish though.

JasonS,
What time of year did you go? Just wondering. Heard they closed inside waters at end of July, but don't know that for sure.

I just talked with a women in Nootka Sound area this morning about fishing at the end of July. She said they haven't laid out the details of the regulations yet and she didn't know when it would happen.

Paranoid: I have fished Nootka from my own boat the last 4 years. Most of the fishing in July is on the outside i.e. Maquinna Point or Bojo Reef for salmon. If you want to fish inside protected waters, don't go until last week of July at earliest for best fishing, on up to 2nd-3rd week of August. You can catch fish inside Nootka earlier or later than this, that is just the peak time. Outside on ocean you can target kings, lings & occassional halibut earlier than this. Tahsis arm has been completely closed to fishing the last several years, & although regs not posted yet, is expected to be so again this year. From town of Tahsis, you have to run to outside of Esperanza or you can fish inside or outside of Nootka Sound. Regs were kinda of complicated in Nootka last year, they are expecting it to be relaxed some but not released yet. For official BC fishing regs go to:
www-pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/english/sfg/ Regs listed their currently are 2001. They wait to last minute like this every year to update them. I have given previous info on fishing Nootka if you search my ID #. I always stay at Critter Cove (they have website too), tie your boat to your cabin, fishing in 5 minutes after starting the motor unless you run outside to ocean. If you stay at Tahsis, you are guarenteed a 20 mile+ run every day before you can even get to the nearest open section. From Tahsis you can go to either Esperanza or Nootka sounds, but last year, all of Esperanza sound was closed. At Critter Cove, you make a single 20 mile boat run to thier location from Gold River (all inside waters) then stay the duration, they have all you need & cater to the do it yourself boaters plus no price gouging. If you need more info, drop me a line anytime

I went the last week of July. I had a great time don't get me wrong. But the regs were kinda weird and allot of Nootka itself was closed. We fished out of our own boat a 19 ft Harbercraft for two of us it was adequete. My Father in Law was the one that took me up and snce it was a free trip it made it even better. As someone else mentioned the nice thing is it is just a days drive to the launch. Had a blast though if I was spnding my own cash I think I would re-think it and go to an area with more open opertunities.
