I have the Epix and it is not a bad reel for the $. The Shimano Stradic is excellent for salmon, Steelhead. Been hearing a lot of good things about the Daiwa too.

Okuma=Good Reel, I have a Metaloid MD30, excellent drag(and other features), just think it is a Tad heavy, but can't go wrong with Okumas'

Shimano Spheros'=Good Reel, This reel just came out, I bought one, and it is my Favorite spinning reel, It has some awesome features(too many too list), and It is very high quality....check it out!!

IMO wink

Woodsy W,
I have been trying to look for a Spero on line but it seems no one has it or pics of it, where did you get it?

Okuma's are great reels for the $$$,Shimano's are great reels for more $$$. I have both neither are that big but...if you get the right size, you won't go wrong with either.

Take a look at the Diawa Regal Z or the Regal X 2500's . Both great reels for the money .Very smooth drags , good capacity and they have a large diameter spools so they cast a mile. Plus they line does not hang up in the bail when you cast .

I have two Okuma Epxior's . Both spools blew up .I did not know that they were two piece spools until they both fell apart two days apart from each other .

I would recomend the diawa also.I have fished them for years.I resently bought two shimano sahara 2000 for summer fishing. Both came with stiff bails out of the box.Last week one of them got reel bad up on the quinault.Back at camp I pulled out the toolkit to oil it and found a whole bunch of extra parts in the bail mechanism alone.I am not a fan of complicating things that already work.I do not see anything good about a bunch of laser cut parts to keep track of in the field.

The diawas are simple strong work horses with all the finer points you could ever want.

It is my opinion that Shimano reels are over engineered.

Whatever you get get the fastest retrieve you can,it helps in the hookset.
