Hello everyone,

My church has asked me to obtain enough salmon to feed 200 people at a big party in September.
I am not sure that I can catch enough by myself, so if anyone has an extra fish to donate then I will come over and pick it up.
The church is Maple Valley Presbyterian Church in Maple Valley. If interested, and if living in the south sound area, please leave message at 425-413-2169.

Thanks.

200 people...sounds like a plea for a commercial type of harvest! rolleyes

Dude...this board is supported by sportsman!

Perhaps a potluck with fish as one of the main dishes would be a more ethical approach!

Just my .02.

In September you can purchase 25 silvers for about $125. The commercials(tribal/nontribal) will be begging to sell them to you at $5 a piece. Or about a dozen of your church members hit the rivers...they will be full of silvers.
Also many hatcheries are giving away surplus salmon that time of year. Sorry. I do give away a few salmon every year to some of the local elderly people just for the joy of seeing their smiles but in this case your asking a bit much

Thank-you for the ideas, especially the one about buying silvers for $5.00 apiece in September. I can use that as a contingency plan in case I do not get enough. Thanks also to the person volunteering Kokanee. I will ask the church cooks about that.

Check with the Nisqually tribe and/or hatchery on Ft Lewis. They usually give away some Kings.

I know you are well intented and it would be a wonderful event for your church. However, to support the activity of netting fish in fresh waters is something I ask you to reconsider. Netted fish for the purpose of selling them is the wrong side of the street for a sportfisher in my opinion. Take BBV Daddys offer or get some help in catching what is needed, maybe 20 or so fish. Please understand that I'm not trying to tell you or anyone what to do or not do. I'm asking you to search your heart and think about the future of sportfishing. You can get fish another way than supporting those that stretch
gillnets across a river.

baddog...you considered that a rip? eek

I have no shark bites so I'll assume that I wasn't that far out of line! wink

It's a triple edged sword...one says...commercially farm reared fish eek the problem becomes promoting a process that yields ecological degradation and a product that one would assume tastes like fish turds or supporting commercially netted fish eek which is a process that exploits an already depleted natural resource and kills everything in their paths for the almighty dollar. The third edge...being the sportsman and after thinking about it for awhile...would of course be the lesser of three evils right?

That relevation has me in for donating 2 Steelhead caught last week as frozen fillet.

E-mail me

baddog...here is how to understand my moniker.
OK my buddy and I are fishing on an ultra zipper that I have fished for many years and have decided to share the bag-o-tricks. We step up with baits of eggs and after a few casts "there's one" (my patented call sign) rings out. Very short while later boom two on turns to three and four and five. By the sixth fish on...to his nill he looks at me with disbelief after hearing there's one he says Fish then a five second pause followed with a headshake and Jesus coming out of his mouth. I guess it would have been less controversial to some to go with Jeezus but what would be the fun in that? laugh

FJ...out.

I am heading down to the Cow this Saturday. If the fishing is as good as it has been, I too may have a couple of frozen vacume bagged fillets to donate.....Donate, now there is an interesting thought. I wonder if a guy could write off the cost of catching the fish? Lets see, Gas for the boat and truck, food, maybe the drink, divided by a limit of three fish, wow that fish (the smallest one), could be a 40.00 write off. Not Bad. :-)

Here is another solution. Safeway has pinks (fresh?) on sale for.79 a pound, and Albertsons has chum (fresh?) on sale for .99 a pound. You could buy them, fillet them, bag them, and throw em in the freezer. No more worries. Neither one is the best fish, but both are good on the barbee.

You could always put in a request to the big guy upstairs. Lets see, 200 people.... 2 fish and a few loaves of bread ought to do it. smile

All joking aside, good luck on your BBQ.

How does the saying go? "Give a man a fish, and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for life." Sounds like barnettm may need some help learning to fish.
