What size down rigger weight do you use and what kind of downrigger do you use them on. I am getting a couple of new scotty electrics with the 60" boom and would like to know what works well for this set up. I currently use a 10lb ball on my cannon easy troll. I tried a 12lb ball but it seemed to put an awful lot of torque on my pedistal mounts.
I usually fish the sound with these riggers but hope to get some more time in the San Juans and Canada soon.

I run 3 scotty elec. on my boat. I tend to run and 10 on one side and 12 on the other. As for the rear I stick with a 12 to prevent problems. I find it easier to gauge my speed with the two different size balls on either side. You will be a happy guy with the new toys :p

I prefer 12lb when fishing deeper than 60'. Guess you'll just have to get out there and experiment!! TWO new 60" Scotty downriggers?? You'll need help, right? Give me a call. :p

I use 15lb balls on my 2 Scottys. once you try this you will never go back to a lighter ball. The Scottys are designed for up to a 20lb ball. There is no stress on the units at all. If you are have problems with stress on the mounting points, then it sounds like you need to re-enforce the mounting points with perhaps a metal plate. 15lb balls enable you to get to the bottom easier in the currents and are much more reliable when using the line counter. You owe it to yourself to give it a try. It makes Blackmouth fishing a whole lot easier also. Jack

Me too! 2- 15# Scotty Balls... You can reinforce your 'riggers with either white poly board (cutting board) or a hardwood like oak. Poly board is my first choice.

I use 15lb balls on my Scottys, also. Either the plain round lead balls, or the teardrop-shaped iron weights by Pro Troll. Once you try the iron weights for blackmouth, you won't go back to lead. They don't hang up on the bottom nearly as easily or as much... the iron is not "grabby" like lead... good for fishing right on the bottom for blackmouth.

We just switched from the standard keeled 10lb ball to 8lb keeled pancake weights. They are 1" thick and about 7" across with a 6" keel. They cut through the water like a fin and work well in high currents. They also prevent line twist alot better. $14 at sportco. I'm sure a 10 or 12lb would work even better.
