I keep reading on this form that if you buy a new outboard in canada that dealers in the states will not honor the warranty on the motor. will dealers in canada honor a warranty on a motor bought in the states?
I find it hard to beleave that an international company would allow dealers to do this. so what is true?

Canadian motors do not have to meet the same emissions standards as U.S. motors, if the motor doesn't have an epa sticker on it, U.S. shops won't honor warranty.

I bought a Yamaha 4 stroke up there (Canada) and the US-EPA compliant sticker was right on the side of it, I suppose that the warranty problem won't happen to me, IF it needs to be fixed...

My Yami that I got from Galleon Marine up in Richmond also has the EPA sticker on it, and if that is the only reason for all this warranty worry, then no prob. Not that I've ever heard of a Yamaha requiring warranty work :p

But even if I did have to make the trip to Galleon from Satsop to get it worked on, I saved $800 buying in Canada, and you can pay me $800 to drive to Canada any day laugh

Ok, even though we are a Yamaha dealer and a merc,evin/johnson etc the only one so far has been with Merc. The Canadian motors have a serial number that when through Merc warranty they will kick it back as the engine was sold in canada.
Some parts are different and have a completly different parts number than what is sold here in the states. Also remember that when you go up to Canada to buy you are supporting their economy not ours. I'm not sure about the Yama's I will check with Yamaha on this.

And the Epa sticker only lets you know that it is compliant with the epa standards for running engines here, has nothing to do with the warranty.

I am going to let all of you US citizens that buy your Yamaha Outboard Motors in Canada in on the facts. Yamaha Motor Corp., USA and Yamaha Motor Canada, LTD are separate and distinct sub-corporations of Yamaha, Japan. Dealers in the USA can not and are not required to honor warranty repairs for units not sold by Yamaha Motor Corp., USA. Since the unit is from Canada the Serial Number (PID) is not in Yamaha USA’s system, and therefore no warranty claims can be entered against that unit. Outboard motors sold in Canada and those sold in the USA do not always carry identical manufacturing standards. Parts may not be interchangeable and may not comply with USA specifications. Replacement parts lists and service information may not be available to US dealerships. The warranty periods of Canadian and US units are not the same and a Canadian unit cannot be registered in the US. It can only be registered in Canada. If it is not registered in Canada, it is impossible for the Canadian selling dealer to contact the owner should there be a safety recall or a factory modification required on a particular unit. Warranty repairs must be performed by a Canadian dealership. I hope this clears up some of the confusion regarding Yamaha Outboards. Ask yourself, “Is the money you saved in Canada really worth it?”

TAV, Thank you for clearing this issue up for us.
I just hope those out there looking for outboards
will support their local dealer. smile
Oh by the way did I forget to mention
I work at one of the dealerships? laugh
Also stop buying Mercurys in Canada . As their warranty is the same .
