Hey FJ,
You going up there, too? I'll be headed out of the COHO resort. You know the boat. I'm taking my Father-in-law and oldest son. If you have VHF on the vessel you're on, same channel as last weekend. If you are on FRS, channel 11.
Look for you up there, .
Andy

Took a friend and his two boys to Sekiu for the weekend. Fished Friday night, Saturday morning, evening, and Sunday morning. Only managed one keeper hatchery each day. Friday and Saturday the water was rough and that made things difficult. The water was great this morning and we got out into the shipping lanes and kept busy for awhile releasing natives and one chinook(10lbs). There was enough chop on the water that it was difficult to see and stay on the rip lines. I heard that it was much better fishing last week. Anyone else?

I just got back from my Sunday trip to Sekiu. Two words sum up the action today. Slow. We met up with FJ this morning at the Coho and launched from there. Water conditions were as good as they get at Sekiu, and minimal breeze. Fog came up a bit around 10am near Clallam Bay, but it was clear about 4 miles out where we were. We landed 7 and kept 4 legals, had a number of other takedowns. They were not feeding on krill near the caves, so we headed out trolling plug cuts and coyote spoons. Here is a shot of a nice hooknose my father-in-law wanted a picture of. Should get better in the next two weeks. Andy

Dogfish, That is a nice fish, how ever I have a couple problems that I just can't keep to myself. I understand wanting to get a picture of a nice native but the problem I have is with the handling of it. I see a hand running through the gill plate and it looks like it will rip off. These fish have a tough enough chance to make it through the gauntlet without the extra wear and tear we bestow upon them. I hope it swam off just fine, but again there are steps we can take to ensure they do. Nice fish!

I wish you were right, but I'm thinking that's a fin under the thumb and not part of the downrigger. Unable to see in the picture is the actual hook nose, I don't see many hook nose hatchery fish this early in the year. If it's not I apologize.

Looks like a clipped fish to me. I can clearly see the top reel part of the downrigger and in place of where the fin would be looks to be the top end of a rocket launcher.

I'm vouching for Andy too. There is no way that's a wild fish. Some people are true sportsman, Andy is one of them.

I had planned to fish Sat. through Mon. but the fishing was so poor that I left Sunday morning without even going out. SLOW is definitely the way to describe it, especially compared to last year. They better show up soon or Flotilla 6 won't be the slayfest that everyone is expecting.

Here we go again....new poster comes in, makes some assumptions about this and that and gives a lecture to a long time poster and pisses a bunch of people off.
I don't even know Dogfish, but can tell you my impression from reading his posts that he is a pretty decent guy and not the type of person that goes around disregarding the law.
May I suggest asking first and/or sitting back and watching the show for awhile before making accusations. JMS

After another hard look and taking in T.Burns and Devine's suggestion I too believe it is a hatchery. In my reply there was never a sour tone towards Dogfish, I again apologize to him for the mistake. I tried to to post it in a way that would suggest that. Thanks for your remarks too Little Fish as I have sat back and watched how things work here. I understand the clicks and topics that seem to fuel the fires around here. However I don't believe the number of post's should suggest the knowledge of any subject. I see how I could have worded it a little different or added a ? in places but the bad intent was never there. I hope that in Dogfish's lack of response he was able to see that. In closing Before we accuse someone of making accusations we should insert a bypartizan tone and read it again.

I agree that you should always ask first. If you look at the picture closer, you see that it is a Penn DR I believe, and that what you see is the fluted end of the rod holder in the background. It makes a perfect line to the rest of the holder.
I understand that you are all a tight knit group and that we who are new to the board must prove ourselves first, but why so much hostility towards the uninformed?? Obviously the question should have been raised as to whether it was hatchery or not if he had a question about it, but perhaps he chose the wrong method of getting that question out.....??
I appreciate most all of the posters on this board. Most of you are true sportsman and very helpful. I look forward to meeting you guys someday. Thanks for everything you do for our sport!

I will add one more detail to help explain myself and why my assumption was made. I took the explanation of (wanting to get a picture)as a way of saying the fish was going to be released quickly and they didn't have a lot of time. And if it was to be released it must be a native, not to mention the perfect location of the rod holder in the background. I know better than to ASS U ME but there was other things involved. And again, no need to be sour and call me names to stick up for friends. We can end it now.

Fishgut....okay. I agree, its hard to get the full scoop reading a few words on a screen and very easy to type something with just the wrong slant to it. I for one have gotten into some great arguments with my GF because of misunderstandings via email. JMS

Little Fish, I'm glad we can put this to an end. I did read it many times before I actually posted it just to avoid what had happened. I joined to give and get reports, not get involved in misunderstandings. Message to Dogfish, Again no harm intended. Fish is Fish and that's why we're Fisherperson's

Andy is probably one of the most conscientious guys you will ever meet! He has far to much love for the fish to allow poor handling of any wild fish on his boat. fishgut...it was a simple mistake no big. FJ...out.

Hey guys,
Here's the scoop. Nobody had it all right.
Fish was wild, but it got caught up in the leader and hooks as it rolled beside the boat causing it to get lassooed (sp?). Anyway, the dehooker stick I carry wouldn't work because the fish was wrapped up pretty good so it did hit the net. It took my father-in-law about 5 seconds to undo the mess and as he picked it up I snapped the photo. I already had the camera ready because we had just caught another fish a few minutes before.
The fish was out of the water for about 15 seconds, but it was the lesser of two evils. I didn't wait for a great shot, just whatever I could get for the picture. Notice the rod and net at his feet, they were left where they were to get the fish taken care of ASAP. Poor fish handling by my father-in-law, maybe, but the fish was pretty fresh and lively and it was the only way he could get a hold of it to get it back in the water. Woulda coulda shoulda. Yeah, I know. But it still swam away just fine. The 7lb hen I caught was missing half of her tail from some attack and still felt lively enough to whack a nice brined plug cut. They are fragile, but they aren't china dolls either.
Notice the cap he is wearing. It is a Stream Team cap that he got for volunteering. He works about 50 some odd days a year volunteering on streamside reforestation projects, redd surveys, and various other projects. He has also was responsible for re-introducing silvers into a local creek by running egg boxes for 8 years in a row. He gives back, so forgive his transgressions.
Can we get back to fishing now?
No ill will to anybody, and to my supporters, thanks for not judging before the story was out.
Andy
