I'm looking at buying a GPS unit, and am looking for a more basic unit. I will be using it mostly at Potholes for finding my way to our blind in the dark. I will also use it deer and elk hunting along with a few trips to Seiku and the sound when the fog rolls in.

I did a search and only found info on the higher priced units that have alot of feature's I don't need. It looks like Garmin is the most popular brand,it seems that the E-trex series by garmin is what I'll look closest at. What do you think?

Garmin are the easiest to use, I have two, 3 plus and a 12XL I think.

I would stay with the more simple units, like one of the 125-150 dollar units at Wal-Mart. Mine is a portable battery operated Lowrance unit that works very well in all my boating applications. It has a map and plotting feature that I never use. The basic information, ie, range and bearing to a waypoint, are all I seem to ever use. Knowing your true groundspeed is also cool and I think all the basic units do that. (On that subject, the previous owner of my jet skiis swore that they would do 60 MPH but my GPS quickly showed that they would max out at 45 MPH. But a true 45 MPH seems like you are flying over water!!!)

Knowing your altitude is also quite handy for hiking and the basic units give you that too. I also like the portable units because they are isolated from the boat's DC power and are not dependant on it. Most also have plug in 12 volt DC adapters in case the batts go dead, which of course will happen sooner or later.

HBP, come in and see me at the store, we've got just about everything Garmin and Magellan makes, and other then online sites, you'll find our prices are hard to beat. As for buying online, sure you save a few bucks but you'll have a hard time getting those technical questions answered. Myself (Scott), Dale or Dave can answer just about any question you might have and explain how to operate the units. laugh
