I just refinished a wood boat totally stripped it and used epoxy for the finish. I used the West Systems Epoxy and was pleased, easy to work with but a little spendy. There are some cheaper brands out there so look around West System is probably the best. On the bottom I went with 2 layers of I think it was 7oz. they call it boatyard cloth and the epoxy for resin. I then topped it with Coat It. It turned out very well. Good luck.
