Hey guys, I want to know if herring is pretty much a must for catching silvers in the salt during this time of the season..... is this true?? Or are lures just as good still?

Welcome ILF!!
Just got back from Sekiu and hering ANYTHING was the ticket , even if it was just a strip on a hootch. If your into them thick coyote's will work, but its well worth the effort to run both! Happy Silver slaying!!

I use a lot of herring, but I also use a lot of coyotes and j-plugs/silver hordes. I guess I have more faith in the good ol' cut plug.

Hey, if you really want to get 'em bring one of those herring jigs along, the kind with 6 small gold hooks with a bead on them, find some bait on your sounder, and jig some of them. That way you will be "matching the hatch". Sometimes you get candlefish or anchovies instead of herring, but whatever is there is what they are feeding on, so it will work. It's also free laugh . Good luck.

The fishing was GREAT! The catching could have used some improvement however........

Herring is great way to take a fish in the salt. As the fish move more into the rivers and start to hit the fresh and salt mix in limited tide control area's then a spinner and herring run 50/50 just depends on what you like to run.
personnelly I like to run a red teaspoon spinner has been very successfull for me in the last few years but every river is differant. First time posting on the forums nice to see a good NW fishing website.

Hey welcome OregonAngler!

I always bring herring when fishing the salt for Salmon...Always.

But I also have several other methods at hand in case they dont bite on herring. If fishing bait ball edges, herring is obviously going to probably work for you. But at other times when bait may be scarce, you want to have several other proven methods up your sleeve so you are not limited to one fishing technique. You never know what is going to work, how much bait there will be in the water, etc. Until you are out there on the water. If you troll or mooch herring for half a day and dont get a strike you need to be able to effectively fish with other methods or you might as well go home IMO.

Be prepared.
