I'm looking forward to a cold wet winter fishing out of an open boat. Wondering if anyone has has advice or recommendations on storm/survival suits.

Hey, I don't think you would want to wear a survival suit. Those are the ones that make you look like Gummby laugh They are to hot and to cumbersome to wear for anything other that life saving in cold water. When I am fishing out of an open boat in foul weather I just dress warm and the put on my slicks, ie. Grundens or Helly Hanson. Those and a pair of Xtra tough boots and you will stay dry. You can go with just about any rain gear but the heavy duty stuff can just be hose off and fish slime or oil won't harm them one bit. For exposure suits, not survival suits, Mustang has some good models. The best selection I have found is at SEA-MAR in Ballard they are commercial fishing gear suppliers.

I would have to recomend a Mustang suit.We used them up in alaska and are very comefortable and give you an edge if you end up in the drink. The royal king lost a deck hand off the trawl deck up north,he was in the water for a good twenty minutes before we saw his strobe and picked him up.He should of been dead of hyperthermia. The coast gaurd said the only thing that saved him was the Mustang suit.

I do not know where to get one around here but if you call a couple of the bigger marine supply stores and they should be able to stear you in the right dierection. They cost somewhere around 300.00 smackers if I remember right.

Mustang Deck suits is the best.
Approved by the CG.
It has a co2 inflator for the back and an oral inflator. Shell is made with high density water proof nylon with a cork lining and a soft weaved mesh inside. It will help you float even with out the inflator blown up (incase you fall in) and it is comfortable to wear all day. The suit will also help keep heat in.
You can also get it equipped with a whistle and a small personal strobe EPIRB.
You can pick it up for $250 to $350 at Western Pioner or Sea-Mar.
I have had one of mine for ten years and still going strong.

If you plan to go to Alaska you can pick them up at the AC store or OSI for $200.

Take a good look at the Mustang line. They have coveralls, bibs, several different styles of jacket and all are very user friendly. I have also worn my neoprene waders on those cold days on the salt, just make sure you rinse them when your done. cool
