To hell with the Chum!

We saw more Killer Whales Saturday than I have seen in my entire life (on Puget Sound anyway). We spotted a few of them in the distance up near President Point and within 10 minutes the whole area around Jeff Head was just crawling with them. There were at least 40. They were close enough we could hear them talking! They were lining up 10 or more abreast chasing chum, I presume. We pulled our gear and just kind of followed them around, yes, at a respectful distance. They had no fear of the boats that were around. At one point, a group of three came up right next to the boat, maybe 10 feet off. Barry has a great shot of that, and also of the lining up abreast. It was truly one of the most incredible things I have seen on Puget Sound. Breaching and rolling around. We spotted three more Sunday. There also were a large number of Dahls porpoise around. Those critters are FAST!

We did see a number of jumpers between Yeomalt and Skiff point. There were a couple of Purse seiners working that area so we really didn't work it very hard.

Trolled deep most of Sunday feeding herring to Shakers. Saw one boat with a double. They were having fun! The net wasn't ready so it was quite a struggle. Couldn't tell if there were BM or Chum though.

Get out and see those Whales!

Sounds pretty cool Gutz- that would be a sight to see. I was returning from a fishing trip on the PT/Keystone ferry and it was just about sunset--mid Oct. and I could not count how many Dahl Porpoises that were surfacing--they were everywhere--amazing.

I think they follow the salmon in about this time every year. It does make for an interesting fishing trip, even if you don't come home with a fish...

the other night i was watching a program about killer whales and they mentioned that at the top of the food chain, the killer whales were getting high concentrationof pcb's. thats horrible to think we are poisoning such wonderful mammals, it ends up that alot of the killer whales of cananda are moving out and finding other places to be cuz of the pollutants and kill of there natural food..herring, salmon..but on another note, they showed the same killer whales attacking a baby grey whale, they did not manage to kill it with the mother right there protecting it, but they almost suceeded, but they did eventually kill a baby grey whale in the end..very fascinating stuff.. what

Here you go

Those are great. I haven't seen orca in a long time. I've seen a few pilot whales and those minke whales out at Sequim, but orcas are just cool.

I heard from Pete the Fish Checker that they were spotted Sunday around Blake Island.

A couple years ago they went through Rich Passage and hung around munching chum for quite awhile.
