I like Daiwa reals. Get one with a few ball bearings if fishin fresh water but if yer fishin the salt I would not get one w/a lot of ball bearings.
Any supple, limp line works well on spinning reels, yer right, max is too stiff.
Trilene, silver thread, stren are all lines that I have had god luck with.
I usually go for the smallest diameter line that I can get away with.
If fishin deep and \or jigging I like the new small diameter high strength lines -- the sensitivity can't be beat. Be sure to use a mono leader tho cuz of the nearly zero stretch.
  Good luck and tight lines
  Sincerely, Roger

I bought a few Okuma f20's last year.. initially they were awesome.. and they are a good reel.. but I would rather fish a shimano stradic 2000. check out ebay you can get them new for $100.
The stradic 2000 are much lighter.. and seem to have a much better drag and are very smooth.

I vote for the Stradic also. I have both the 2000 and 4000. Very smooth and trustworthy drag system.

I also vote for the Shimano Stradic. They have a new model that will be available around mid-Dec., a 2500 series that will hold a little more line than the 2000.

Just got a Okuma Metaloid from Cabela's last week. I havent used it yet but it sure feels nice. Only draw back that I can see is it may be to pretty to fish with Fool

I use Shimano Symetre ($85) like my guide friends do, but the Stradic ($100+) is great too. As far as line goes, I use Suffix in yellow from E-Angler.com. You get 1/4 pound spool for less than $10. Breaking strength and abrasion resistance equal to Maxima ug but handles better. Also comes in clear and (I thnk) green. I use #8 and #10 on the Symetre 2000 but you can go up to #15 on the 4000 model. Another good line is Maxima Perfexion, but I do alot of line watching and side drifting so I like the yellow colors.

Why spend so much? I have a Shimano Sahara that I've had for about a year. It's probably caught 2 dozen fish already, and is going strong. I think I paid about $55 for it at G.I. Joes. Nice drag, smooth action, seems to be pretty durable.

Fishstik...two things. Think front drag on the reel! McCoy Mean Green if you choose to go with mono! FJ...out.
