In reviewing the bottom of my driftboat after 5 trips in low water, It became aparent that I needed to add some additional protection to the bottom of the boat.

I had a number of small dings in the epoxy that went through to the fiberglass. It wouldn't take long with that kind of damage to start eroding the bottom.

As of tonight there are now two coats of Gluv-it on the DB bottom, one full can. I am buying another tomorrow and will put on coats 3 and 4, maybe even a 5th. The first coat took a bit more to fill in the gaps between the chine and the boat.

Finally, this was the first bucket o' Gluv-it that I have purchased, does it come in a 5 gallon pail? The one gallon bucket really isn't a gallon anyway, more like 2.5 quarts. It must be that way for mixing, I guess.

If the original coats of gluvit didn't solve your problem, I doubt more will either. I suspect you will want more layers of fiberglass with the gluvit. The top layer is going to get rubbed, and you need something there to take the rubbing. I think you'll want something with some more strength to it, which means glass.

On my old wood boat, we put a layer of 25 oz woven mesh for the protection layer, saturated and laid with epoxy. Then we put a coat of epoxy mixed with graphite for the final coat. This boat ran over the rocks for eight years with no need for repair. You can get this stuff from the wooden boat shop in Seattle.

Actually,

I had no Gluv-it on the boat prior to fishing it. I think that after 5 coats I will be close to 1/4" thick, that's the goal. I might put a total of 3 containers on the bottom, and not fish my favorite river with 3 people when running less than 400 CFS.
