Can anybody tell when the force outboards became a good motor? (50 to 125hp)

Im lookin at a boat with 93 115hp and the seller says its a good motor no problems . All I've ever heard is don't touch em.

Any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The good ones are the ones built in the Merc plant in Fond Du Lac rather than the old Force plant in Hartford. The last few years Force was Merc's bargain brand. Basically a Merc w/o oil injection and a few other whistles.

A buddy of mine has had a 1993 120 force for 3 years, broke big time twice. We now go in my boat (Suzuki power). I have met only one guy with a trouble free Force, but it was real low hours.

Force outboards pretty much suck.

Herm,
Back away from the Force!!!!! Next thing the guy will be wanting to sell ya some waterfront property.....in Arizona. Have a good friend that didn't learn his lesson, had a Force 120 on his old Trophy, fried it. Bought a new Arima and to save on some money let the dealer talk him into a "new" Force 120 on it, well guess where the new Force has been......that's right in the shop being rebuilt, this one had about 400 hrs on it. A Force is the last motor I would hang on any boat!!!
Good luck and tight lines, Jeff laugh laugh

After watching the problems and thousands of dollars my dad spent on his force in the past, I just have one thing to say. Garbage!
I wouldn't even risk it.

Sorry dudes the new Forces have retained the Chrysler powerhead which is the toughest one on the market! Forces problems was all the other crap which ran the motor...and now those components are all Mercury.....been trouble free with my 1997 75 hp. A 1993 Force I would be worried about as I don't know when Mercury took over the Force line?
I'd check into that.

Two friends, two boats, two forces. Both engines have had nothing but powerhead problems.being as I am the mechanicly inclined between us i have had to give the bad news both times.Do not get a force if you can avoid it at all!

The only problem, Periwinkle, is that a Force is not a Yamaha. I can't gaurantee it will get stolen. Well, maybe if the Force was left on the sidewalk with a "FREE" sign on it. rofl

Heard enough Herm? Helped my buddy rebuild his 120hp Force last year. Low hours prior to rebuild too. Going out with that motor even after the rebuild makes me nervous. Perfect motor for the adventurous... Buy a Yamaha kicker if you have a Force main. At least you know you will get home eventually.
