Not a good day for me. Something blew up in my pump today on the Cowlitz. I don't know what it was but I can see a big piece of aluminum when I look into the jet. I know it isn't good. Does anyone know what this could be. Are there any websites for jetpump manufactures. Thanks for the info. By the way fishing was o.k. tons of boats and bankies too.

Thanks for the reply. I have another question. Ithought the impeller was on the bottom of the unit where the water is pumped in. I look into the jet where the water comes out thats where the chunk of the aluminun is at. The piece of aluminum is about 4 inches long and about an inch tall. Is there a spiral aluminum wall that goes from the intake at the bottom of the pump to the actual outtake where you get your propulsion. Thanks for any info.

Sounds like part of the sleeve inside your pump let go. Pull the shoe off of the bottom of the pump and you will be able to figure out what broke. The sleeves are replacable and cost somewhere around $40. If it is the impellor I do not know what a replacement aluminum inpellor costs but a new stainless steel one will run about $400. Make sure you put anti sieze on the studs or bolts (depending on if your pump is an old or new model) when you reassemble it. I just had mine apart this weekend to sharpen the impellor. Outboard jet that makes the pumps does not have a website that I can find. You can find out what model pump yours is by looking on the side of the pump, it will have a stamp (old models) or a label plate (new model), yours is probably an "R" model based on the size of your motor.

You said it was a piece of alum. If indeed it is, Its not the sleeve, Thats stainless. Take the thing apart.

SHD,
The sleeves are not SS, they are aluminum. I have replaced 1 on my old pump and part of the impellor sharpening this weekend was to file the intake nose on the sleeve to smooth out the transition between the sleeve and the shoe (new style pump). They were both aluminum.

Jeff, Ibelieve it was the sleeve. The sleeve is the part that sits down in the shoe and is held on by the four bolts on the outside of the shoe. Do you know where I can get one? Boy I feel alot better now, I thought this was going to cost me a few c-notes. Thanks for all the help. Works is for people who don't know how to fish!

DAF,
Check out this guys site on outboard jets. He's got lots of picks on the break down of the pump as well as the address and phone number for OJC in San Leandro, CA (the maker of your pump).

good luck,

Impeller,if aluminum,is about $140-$150 the last I checked. The sleeve is aluminum, and run $40-$50 They should be pretty easy to find,
Try to keep your impeller sharp, and the sleeve smooth.
You should shim your impeller so its as close to the sleeve as you can get without rubbing.
Whoever you get the parts from should be able to give you some pointers on doing this. They are actually pretty simple.

da, hntnfsh is right, get a new sleeve if thats it or impellar if thats it, check the impeller for burn marks on the cutting edge? it will look pitted, if its bad on all three blades replace it and buy a new one and keep the old one for a spare. never sharpen the cutting edge of an impellar, that will change the angle of bite and speed up the pitting on the blades, which will lead to the impellar blowing up. stay away from the stainless impellar, those where developed by woolridge boats for alaskan waters, heavy glacier silt, which chews up aluminum impellars pretty quick. also if you where to jam up the pump(rock or stick)the aluminum impellar would give, the stainless does not, resulting in broken crank or something else? shimming the impellar out is really important for peak performance, i check mine all the time, if you got the impellar off check the bolts holding the whole pump assembly on, these i would lock tight , they will come loose and fall out, i got lucky and caught mine before they came all the way out. nice sharp grates help to but if you are in the rocks like i am its a waste of time.. good luck

It sounds like your wear ring went S.H.; they are made to wear more than your impeller to help keep the impeller from major damage. I didn't get the make of your outboard but if it's a Merc, Yamaha or Honda check with www.3riversmarine.com they should have it stock, for the right price.
