I finally entered the 21st century and recieved a digi-cam from Santa...who would have thought it would have taken me this long...

Anyways....I have the most difficult time getting my computer to reconize the camera.

It is a Canon A-40...I am running Windows 98 with 2 USB Ports.

I have ran my scanner off the USB Port without a problem in the past (although when I first loaded it, I had intermitent trouble getting the computer to pick up the scanner)...but I havent had that problem since!

I loaded all the software and got the camera plugged in all ready to go and NOTHING! As soon as I run the software and choose to download the picutres, the camera should kick right in but it doesnt.

Reloaded the software...still nothing. Now when the camera is hooked up to the computer...a little green light should pop on and the LCD screen should turn off...it does none of that.

Went to Canon's site to download a driver and the driver it provided me was the same driver that was included with the software.

I tried running it off differnt ports...restarting my computer on numerous occasions and unhooking my scanner etc. etc. and I get nothing.

The second time around, I did get the window that pops up and says your computer has detected new hardware but after that, the camera did not react nore did the computer.

Any suggestions??? confused

Thanks! beer

Sparkey, ive got the A-40 too, good choice...
i had problems with the USB/win98 thing also. i bought a card reader for $20 and that solved the problem for me. just plug the compact flash card into the reader and it acts like a seperate drive...no USB complications each time you want to d/l pics to the computer, and you can erase the CF card from there too.

1) Upgrade to XP.

2) Turn off your anti-virus software (if you have it) and reload the software.

3) Unplug all other USB devices.

4) Make sure your USB is configured correctly in the BIOS.

5) Hit CONTROL+ALT+DELETE and turn off all programs running in the background. Except for SYSTRAY, EXPLORER, and TASKMON.

There's a huge compatability difference between WIN98 and WIN98SE. WIN98 has problems in the multimedia area. My brother got and MP3 player and has the same problem as you(98). We put it on mine(98SE) and no problems at all. Also some upload with the camera on and some with it off. And some you have to set it internally to upload, like mine......

Making the jump to XP will solve all of your Plug-N-Pray problems.

I second the notion of getting a card reader. I have had my digi cam for years now and I have never plugged it directly in to the pc.

Plus, I think its faster to download pics when you use the card readers.

There are many new card readers that actually will read many formats of cards, not just compact flash or whatnot, take a look at those in case you upgrade and get a different camera someday that uses another type of media.

The new ones read compact flash, sony memory sticks, smartmedia, secure digital, and a few others that escape me at the moment. One of those and your covered.

I have two Sonny Digital Cameras and haven't had a problem with either, but let me ask one question when you tried to download pictures from camera to computer did you select the play or veiw function on the camera. That might be your problem.
