There is a campground right next door to the Resort.

There is a bar onboard the Ship at the resort as well as a pretty good Restaurant. Check out www.obmg.com and look for the Canadian Princess.

Let me tell you a little tale about the Oak Bay Marine group.

I signed up for a trip with them about 6 years ago. When I called them with my credit card, I asked about their trip insurance. I was working in a demanding job at the time, and I wanted to know what my options were if work intruded. The young lady on the phone said, no problem, buy the trip insurance, and you'll be covered. So I did.

Three days later, the paperwork came, and the terms of the trip insurance were death of you or a family member, or your hospitalization were the only things that the trip insurance would cover.

So I called them back, got the supervisor on the phone and explained my plight. Too bad, was the answer. Well, I'd like to cancel the trip, then. Nope, was the answer.

So, they'd lied to me, and weren't going to allow me to cancel the transaction. Fine, that's why we use credit cards in these things, to protect ourselves, right?

So, I called Visa, and canceled the transaction. Everything seemed fine, until three months later, I got notification from Visa that they had contacted the vendor, and they were going to reinstate the charge! It seems that Visa's policy when dealing with purchases of accomodations and trips is to rely more heavily on the word of the vendor than on the customer.

So, this, as you might expect, steamed me. I called the Visa folks, and asked for some explanation. They explained how, for purchases made more than 50 miles from home, they tended to rely on the vendors.

At this time in my life, I was traveling a lot, and was running about 5 to 8,000 bucks a month through the card. Visa gets about 2% of every charge you make, so at this rate, as a customer, I'm worth $1200 a year to them. The charge in question was for about $400.

After we did that math, and I told them that, if they charged me this, they were going to lose a business customer, Visa ate the charge. However, Oak Bay ended up being able to keep my money.

Oak Bay Marine Group lied to me and stole my money. It will be a cold day in hell before I ever do business with them again, and I recommend that you keep your hand firmly on your wallet if you choose to book with them.

Oh, and as it turned out, I got sent to Tokyo during the time I would have been fishing.

Thanks Silver Hilton. rolleyes

I on the other hand have never had any problems with OBMG. I have always had a great time with thier guests and crews.

The response so far has been underwhelming.

If there is any interest in this trip please let me know before it goes any further.

Gutz,

I had heard the same good things as you just said, which is why I wanted to book with them. I've never been to the boat, so I can't say anything about the trip itself.

Nor will I. There are plenty of honest companies around to do business with.

Isn't the internet great? Or terrible depending on which side you are on. Would be nice if Oak Bay Marine Group representitive Joe Walsh chimed in right about now.

A bunch of us in our GHPSA chapter have two boats booked for this trip in July. Most of us have our own boats, etc. and do our own thing at Westport or elsewhere. Actually sounds kinda fun to build a little commaderie and let someone else handle the wheel for once. Geez, does this mean I don't even have to clean the boat?

i took a trip with OBMG about 4 or 5 years ago out of Ucluelet...i had a great time. our boat took limits of halibut each day, those guys know how to put you onto fish. as far as the insurance thing goes, i guess thats just a reminder to us all to always read the fine print and ask the right questions, eh?

Went out 2 years ago on the Princess boats and had a good time. The it was one of their early trips and the weather was pretty rough but the fishing was OK. The food at the pub is good. I would recommend staying in the Hotel or on land rather than in a room on the boat. The room on the boat was small, stuffy and very noisey until very late as they cleaned up after the bar closed.
Last year we fished out of tofino with Weigh West and had a great time. The boats are smaller, the accomidations better and the food is very good. We are going back again this spring for some more King and Hali action.

There is a campground right next door to the Resort. If this goes like most Flotilla's have, there will be a fair amount of Partying on Friday night (Saturday, too, if anyone has any energy after a whole day on the Ocean;)). The campground would seem to be a fine place for this.

The price above is the drive in option. There are also options for fly in with lodging, or drive in with lodging.

There are 2 sizes of boats, one for 14 people and the other for 22. Joe is holding the big boat for us.

Please let me know soonest if you would like to participate.
