What is the preferred method of flushing the saltwater from an outboard with a pump? The manual says to simply rinse with freshwater but that doesn't seem adequate.

The pump unit won't fit into a gargabe can filled with water. I don't want to dip it into a lake on the way home every time, either.

Any suggestions?

Is rinsing with a hose good enough since it's a 2-stroke? (very small water jackets that drain completely, maybe?...)

I always use a hose adaptor that is made just for the purpose you are asking about.

There is a screw on the pump that you take out and screw the adaptor into it , then hookup the garden hose to it and run some water through it for a bit and replace the screw. Takes only a few minutes.

fp=flush please

Dunkin it in the lake or river is the best by far.
I usually back down even further than when i launch. (been known to float the trailer, oops!)
but don't forget the plug.
this rinses the trailer too, which is every bit as important as the jet or motor. then while the motor is running, i dip my rods in the lake and rinse allthem off at the same time. when i get home, i park the boat, and go lie to the wife.

Using the adapter sounds good for the motor if it's not running, but what about the pump without any water? Running the impeller dry won't hurt it?

I guess I might have to simply start doing the lake thing on the way home. Wouldn't take any more time than hooking up the garden hose at home. Probably oughta put a washdown pump in the boat so I can hose the whole thing down while it's sitting in the lake.

Thanks for the replies.

I have an 18 foot Formula Vee with a 115 Yamaha Jet and have been flushing it with the adaptor for years. The waterpump gets water with the adapter unit. Do not ever run the motor without the waterpump being wet or you won't have an impeller for long. It does help to use "Saltaway on the jet as well as your aluminum boat , that salt is not good for either.

I ran a 140 Suzuki on my 18' Duckworth and that boat was used in salt all the time. After every use in salt I would take the boat to the lake and run the main and kicker until they were both back up to temp. The idea was to bring the metal back up to temp to open the poors in the material and that way all of the salt particles would be flushed out. I do the same now with my inboard 350 Chevy, no matter how late it is getting I always take the time to flush the main and kicker at the lake. This will also help with getting some of the salt off the trailer too. I have done this technique for years and have never had a salt problem.
