Crabin,
Home Depot (and I am sure others) sell vinyl coating in spray cans. I did a couple DR balls to experiment and it seems to do work just fine. I think I put 4 or 5 coats on. I believe they also have the dip coating, but when I saw the spray I went that route.

I just coated my balls (ouch)

The stuff you want is Loctite Color Guard:

It's a rubber, not vinyl coating

Stoneway Hardware in Seattle has it in stock

liquid electrical Tape. NAPA stocks it and it comes in a can with a brush in the lid. Its great stuff, the only bad thing about electrical tape is the glue and with this stuff it coats itself onto whatever. I have cans in three colors and I think they make about 5

I used the "plasti dip" brand from home depot. It is a heavy duty flexible rubber coating. It worked great but took 6 coats before I was happy. One can will cover 3 balls and it comes in differant colors. Now I have nice Blue Balls.

A bare lead weight can react with the stainless steel DR cable and create a problem voltage in your fishing zone that will make fish avoid this zone. Its also a good idea to use a plastic snap to attach your weight to the cable or use a small piece cord to attach the weight to insulate the weight from the wire.

A leather strap works really go for this not only does it stop the electrial current but if you get snagged up you don't rip the downrigger off the boat, remember adding coating to your balls creates more friction meaning the angle of the dangle is increased, Doug
