The elk were thick on the right bank, when I floated down further they took off, there was even a small deer hanging out with them.

Ok Justin, I will show you the deer, tonight when I get home. He wasnt in this photo, I saw him as I approched the tail out. Maybe you can identify the species for me, it's actually the first deer I have seen on the -----, I thought maybe they were hunted out. Its not like Montana where the deer are around every corner of the river. <img border="0" alt="[eat]" title="" src="graemlins/eat.gif" />

Kevin is right... All deer on the OP are blacktail deer. There is a healthy population out there, however, they are much more secretive than the whitetail or mule deer you find in MT which is why you don't see them often.
And the elk are different as well from MT... Roosevelt elk are larger than the inland Rocky Mountain variety, but with smaller antlers.

The deer are elusive, this is the first I have ever seen on the ------ in many years of floating it. It is not an Elk, although at first I thought it might be a baby ElK as it was hanging close to the Elk herd. Lots of Fun to see..... you have to love the coast, wildlife everywhere...not including the locals
