I have been seeing many many pics on some various websites lately of people holding up wild spring chinook from the Columbia for hero shots.

Given that we are now facing another early closure of this fishery due to the excess take of ESA listed upriver stocks, should we being do our part and thus, not bring these fish out of the water???

Chinook, especially those fresh from the salt, do not C&R very well...netting them, bringing them on board, and then holding them up for a hero shot should be halted.

These are the very last of these precious fish...they are ESA listed!!! Treat them like they should be treated...or not only could these sort of selective fisherys be pulled out from under us down the road but most importantly, we could be helping seal their fate!

You are 100% right 4 salt. If we want to keep fishing for these great fish, we need to use rubber nets, release them in the water and do all we can to protect them fish. I know some will be quick to howl about the commercial nets and the Indians, but the bottom line is we cant do much about them. We can, and should control our actions.

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

Hard to argue with that. But how 'bout you stop referring to them as "hero shots".....it just ticks off the very people you're trying to convince. They're pictures.

Hey Surecatch - appreciate the good intentions, but why should YOU have to apologize for Cowlitzfishermans' PATHETIC, DEPLORABLE and downright HOSTILE attitude? And that's just to the fish... huh

I understand where you are coming from sparkey. And the message you are trying to get across is an important one. Now let me ask you how many "HERO SHOTS" you have taken in your lifetime? Do you fish for wild steelhead? Do you fish for puget sound chinook? Have you ever accidentally caught a "wild fish" and taken pictures of it?
I have and I will continue to do so.

I would love to share my photo album with you sometime and show you my "HERO SHOTS"

Hello Mcfly, the early closure is not because we took too many its because are being penalized for the nets taking more than they were supposed to.

Though I do agree with safe fish handling ethics for release (if your going to let it go you might as well make it count).

Better get out of the brainwashing factory while you still can. You might end up like 4salt.

If you dont like guys taking pictures of fish, maybe you should stop fishing. Surely the stress put on a fish from a fight is as great, or worse than lifting them out of the water for a quick photo.

Smile life is great. Keep fishin and having fun. wink

There is nothing that you can do about the nets. Try as you might. No matter how feeble or how Grandeur your attemps. Even if you got all the fisherman from every one of these fishing forums, too stand with you at the Capital of Washington. Although you would get great publicity from such an action, it would not stop the nets from going into the water. You know it and I know it.
As long as there is money being made through these resources it not going to end.Not until it is to late.
Here's a thought I had in writing this. Why don't all you so called Sportsfisherman go on strike. Don't Buy any fishing products. Don't use any guide services. Put your boats and rods away. GET UNITED. STAND TOGETHER.
GET SOME AIR TIME. The only place I ever here about stopping the nets is on these here boards. Nothing in the news papers, nothing on the news. Let's see some ACTION! Show everyone that somebody out there cares about something.

anglin- I ask this in all seriouseness since I know you know what your talkin about when it comes to nets. do you mean that they can never be stopped because of the way politics and money work? or do you mean that due to the way the treaties were written ? like no matter how many people protest it , it wont change the legal contract of the treaty? I dont understand how there is any commercial season at all on ESA listed fish. there was no commercial season on spotted owl or any other ESA listed animal. its amazing how minds change when money is at work. But if the tribes decided to stop netting ESA fish, it would leave egg on the face of white commercial if they continued to do it. and it would show that tribal leadership is light years ahead of our own government when it comes to managing resources.

How Ya Doin' Chappy?
They can't stop nets for both those reasons. Why is it that tribes have something to show the Governments, weren't we the ones who extended the hands of friendship hundreds of years ago? Where's that gotten us? The Tribes and the Commercial industry are on different sides of the river waiting for someone to blink.
SportFisherman are all talk no show. I take that back. There are a few out there with the heart to do something, but lack the will to rally everyone.
This time I think The Goverments and the commercial industry have to take the initiative on this one, and prove to the Tribal Governments that there not going to Bend Indians over and not have the common courtesy to give us a Reach-A-Round. Just Kidding. But, you understand what I'm saying.
Don't make the same mistake twice.

Leave the nates in the water, get the hooks out of the fish as quickly as you can.
Hero shots always make me Questing the motivation of the person holding up the fish.We have had un clipped springers to the boat this year ,and not one has come out of the water.
By removing the fish from the water you add stress ,wile increasing the chance of death.
Good point Sparky

man let me tell you, sometime these bb's are WAAY better than jerry springer or maury...as for the wild springers, keep 'em in the water, the more that make it, the better chances we have at an opprtunity to fish for these fine fish!
