The centerpiece of the Bush administration's national energy policy -- drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- was resuscitated April 2, 2003 when a House panel voted to allow energy exploration in the Alaskan wilderness. The House Resources Committee voted 32 to 14 to give oil companies access to the refuge. (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service via Reuters ) Imagine that...

they know they have no chance of re-election so its rape, robbery and corrrrrrroboration for the next year and a half. it has been a legislative marathon for both parties while everyones backs are turned. It shows how truley unpatriotic our legislative politicians are on both sides of the aisle for pulling this kind of slight of hand in a democracy.

Every president has sky high approval rating during war time. That can change fast. Ask George senior how that works.
Once we win this war folks will focus on a our awful economy and the Bush gang's flagrant repeal of many environmental laws.

Don't you find it funny though Vic? Poll 5,000 republicans and the best you can get is a 71% :p Metalhead - How much oil do you think we (the U.S.) imports from the middle-east? Whatever you do, don't tell Canada, Mexico or Venezuela, OK.

4salt, the U.S. imports around 2,000,000 barrels of oil EVERY DAY from the middle east... source i would like to see that number much lower.

Metalhead - Recall that Congress lifted the Alaska oil export ban in 1995. Prior to that all Alaskan oil had to be refined and sold in the U.S. Since the ban was lifted, Alaskan oil is now traded on the open market and sold to the highest bidder. Given the proximity of Alaska to the Pacific Rim countries (i.e., Japan) that's where the oil is going.
Remember that oil is a global commodity and is traded on the open market. Therefore drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge will not reduce the U.S. dependency on oil, foreign or domestic, by one drop. Whether you agree or disagree with drilling in ANWR, everyone should recognize that oil is global and drilling in ANWR has nothing to do with energy independence. It has everything to do with business. Namely oil company business. That's who GWB is supporting. Can you guess why?

The Ballad of Jed Clampett Come and listen to a story about a man named Metalhead. A poor fisherman, barely kept his family fed, Then one day he was shootin at some food, And up through the ground came a bubblin crude. ...well, you know the rest of it... but in all seriousness, i dont suffer from the "not in my backyard" mentality that a lot of so-called environmentalists do. i would much rather have "big oil" drilling on U.S. soil so they can be watched closely to make sure that the proper environmental controls are in place and being used. the oil wells in africa and the middle east and other various 3rd world countries have almost no environmental controls and can do much more harm. im a big believer in "think globally, act locally" and i just dont give a rats ass about displacing a handfull of cariboo in the arctic. as you know, oil is non-renewable and will run out sooner or later, so its only a matter of time before we tap that first well. that is the reality, like it or not.

"the oil wells in africa and the middle east and other various 3rd world countries have almost no environmental controls and can do much more harm."
Really? Can you comment with references on the number of species that might be affected in say, the ANWR, vs. the already established oil fields in the Middle East and Africa? I don't mean to diminish the value of species in those two areas, but certainly there's a difference between drilling in new areas and drilling in established fields, with established infrastructures (roads, towns, etc.).
For the record, I consider myself pretty moderate, and the constant comments from some individuals referring to anyone questioning the need to drill in a friggin' park (not protesting, just questioning...you know, asking a question about what the risks are vs. the gains) a bleeding heart, burkenstock wearin' granola muchin' liberal are insulting, not to mention infantile.
For @#$%'@ sake, how do some of these people (I'm not referring to metalhead, by the way) even figure out how to log on to the internet?

Why do you think it is we still have a need for oil?
It is not because we cannot find another source.
It's all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
