Depends on size. If of the same weight I will take the chinooks.

The name is Ak(Kings) for a reason, I've never had my ass kicked by a coho or nearly been spooled by a coho.

Tough choice.

For me, I guess it just comes down to the difference in how it felt between the times I was fishing for slabs and caught some nice silvers and the times I was fishing for hooknose and tied into a mouth-foaming brute of a king. A little hard to forget those times and not want to take another hack. Heck, my knees are still quivering.

Not to mention that first mouthful of spring chinook either. mmmmmh mmmmmh good. The frosting on the cake!

I can go either... I spend 100+ days a year on the Sound fishing for BM with gear... But nothing compares to a smoking 8 to 10# Silver on a 5wt or 6wt!

I'm Elkrun on this one...

Coho do more damage after you get them in the boat. I love that "coho death roll" they do.

I've caught some big Coho but when that 40lb King takes it to the bottom and sets on it, then when you get him up and he sees the boat and goes airborne \:D \:D ....... I guess if the Kings aren't biting I'd take a Coho.

p.s.
imho on med. rod and 12lb. test nothin is more spectacular than a "hot" chum.

i would have to go with a chinook just because they have alot of strength and can tire you out. but if they jumped like a coho that would make it my number one salmon.

Herm- no fair, Chum weren't an option! I love to catch the chumsters right as they enter the rivers... see them break more rods than any other fish. BUT... watching a school of 10 or more silvers 8-10lb chasing your clouser right to the boat...well, it makes me all tingly! Actually had them smack into the side of the boat making that last charge to get the fly! Tough to beat em. \:D

What about humpies? They are the toughest little salmon around.

Come on EL, pinks shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as silvers and kings.

LIke said above, you get a hog that heads straight for the bottome in 200 ft of water and then races you back to the top and becomes airborn.... hard to beat.

But an 18 pound Coho screaming across the top of the water and then going 4 feet vertical cannot be beat!

I've got 4 or 5 steelhead in the salt, all were caught by clients and all but 1 were native, which were released, all but 1 were 8-12lbs but 1 went high teens/low 20's, I don't think any of them fought comparable to salmon of the same size, I wasn't impressed.

If I had one fish to show for a lifetime of fishing.....it wouldn't be a silver....nothing is as totally impressive as a slab!!! And that's not saying that there is anything sleezy about a nice hooknose.
