I'm headed down to Oregon on Sunday afternoon, and was thinking about fishing the Kalama or Lewis for a couple of hours on my way through. I don't know anything about either river, so could someone give me a clue where there's some bank access for springers? I was thinking of drifting eggs or eggs under a float.
Thanks.

If you want to fish the Kalama, take exit 32 (Kalama River Road) and go till you see Mehaffy's campground. Once you go past that you'll see a turnout to fish. That is beginners hole. Walk back along the road and fish off of the rocks. Good a place as any. Good luck. ~steelymann~

thats true, beginner hole has the big pull out (where the hatchery outlet dumps in to the river )and alot of people. but go down to the bend into the deeper water on those big rocks and bounce big eggs. I usually see a boat pick one up there. it can be harder to cast with the rocks right behind you but it is a good spot. red barn is just up from there past prichards store. that is a good hole to hit if you just have an hour or so and wanna wet a line.
sometimes I will hit the very bottom boat launch in the frog water and throw k-10's thru 16's. if i only have an hour and dont want to leave the hwy on my way back to seattle from ptld. the kalama is a beautiful river worth checking out

BB75,
Beginner's Hole is only 3-4 miles up from the freeway, just past Mahaffey's. Look for the first (and only?) State Access on the north side of the river. If you pass the State Hatchery on your left you've gone to far. I don't know how they are running now but they are due. Bank fishing for spring chinook is never as easy as steelheading, but fortunately the Kalama is fairly easy to read. It won't take long to find some good holes that are not on private property; many are near the road, some are off the beatin' path. Look for fish early, late and deep.

prichards said that 7 were caught in the canyon on tuesday and one that was 34lbs i believe. they seem to be shooting up into the canyon quickly. try at painted rock and some of the other pull outs up in the canyon. go to the upper hatchery then turn around and try the next few pull outs (you will see the big painted rock)
