Has anybody tried fishing in sammamish slough for bass? While launching my boat to try out the new outboard i was cruising through there and it looked like good bass country. Are there any bass in there? If so any tips on what to use for them might give em' a shot. Thanks in advance.

oh ya lots of small mouth in the slough dont know to much about down by kennmore but at the mouth of lake sammamish tons of fish spawning up there

I have no idea what to use for the bass. But should you be fortunate to catch any, KILL THEM ALL! There are over two dozen NON-NATIVE fish in this state, many of which live in Lake WA, and they almost all feed on salmon smolts. Mash them into the bottom of the boat, or even eat the damn things if you must.

Death to bass and all non-nates.

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. While bass may eat a few smolts, use your heads. Most smolts migrate in the early spring when bass are dormant or involved in spawning or late summer when bass are hiding out in the shallows. Plus most smolts head straight out to sea depending on the run (except perhaps sockeye which are trout-like in their habits) so bass do not get a chance to make a sizable dent in their numbers. Bass have been in Lake Washington for at least 50 years. Probably closer to 100.

And I'd really like to see proof of the accusation that 'almost all' the non-native species in Lake Washington feed on salmon smolts. I seem to remember a study mentioned in The Reel News that the Oregon equivilent to the WDFW did of bass and walleye in the big C that mentioned only a few salmon smolts in their stomach contents. The accusation that bass are responsible for eating up all the salmon smolts is ludicrous.

Plus think about this: if there were no non-native species in Washington then there would be no freshwater fish left to catch after the hatchery trout were depleted.

bravo on the come back about bass.....Just chock the anti-bass comments up to good insight into the mind of a Washington Trout supporter....wild fish only ....fly fishing only....my way or the highway only...

Thank you for so eloquently supporting my argument against all non-native species. And against hatchery pracites, for that matter.

You bet I am an advocate of our WILD, NATIVE fish. And I make no apologies for it. Do I support only fly-fishing tactics - no way! To each his own. I can sling the spinning gear with the best of them, when I choose to.

But the point is, without groups like WT to at least try to recapture a bit of the wild fisheries that have been lost for a myriad of reasons, it would be nothing buy spiny-rays for all. Yuck.

As for your love of non-nates, maybe you'd be thrilled to have the bighead carp which are HUGE fish currently threatening the Great Lakes ecosystem, and stand to become the dominant species if not somehow stopped (electro-shock barriers are currently being installed in streams below the lakes to prevent fish from migrating upstream farther each year - a dubious hope at best).

I noticed that you could not come up with any proof that bass harm salmon stocks.

And most lakes could not support the fishing pressure that they do now with only 'WILD, NATIVE' fish. The wild native fish can not breed fast enough to recover from heavy fishing pressure present in our urban and suburban lakes. Especially since many of them do not have inflow/outflow streams for trout to breed in, and in those lakes that do have streams, most of the streams are compromised by development. The position you are advocating is for closed or empty lakes with no catchable fish in them.

And as for carp, some people like to fish for them. I'm not one of them. And yes, I'll enjoy catching walleye. And bass. And trout. And perch. And crappies. And salmon. And catfish. And so on, and so on.

Back in the early 70's while doing survey work for a freeway project, we discovered that some of the barrow pits that had filled up with water had small trout in them. On mentioning it to an ODFW employee in the area, he informed us that the pits had been stocked with bass and the small trout were actually steelhead smolts planted there to feed the bass. The dummies, those poor bass probably starved to death since they did'nt eat salmonoids.

I never said they didn't eat salmonids period, I said they did not have a chance to make a significant impact on the number of salmon smolts. Will bass of a certain size eat them when available? Probably. But the accusation that they eat enough of them to make a dent in the population is still ludicrous.

People who only fish fresh water for trout are depriving themselves. It's like hitting yourself in the forehead with a board and claiming you like it.

How many smolt will a bass eat? They'll never tell !! Your arguement is based on assumptions just as those of the guys arguing against you. Nobody really knows how high a mortality rate is inflicted on a run by just one species. Ya need to chill out! Go fishing! Go put some hurt to them thar bass and help the little smolts out. Do these icons mean anything to you?

I volunteered three years of my time to working on fish surveys in three different lakes.

The biggest salmon smolt eaters were freshwater sculpins, a NATIVE FISH! Bass ate lots of Sculpins, and Crawdads mostly. so back eddy can back paddle. As bass have actually been shown to help salmon HA HA HA. No joke.

As for your for your so called native trout in lakes. News flash! Trout need running water to spawn. The only native fish in lakes without tributaries were minnows!

As I am someone who likes to fish for Bass how would you like me to start tossing none native trout in the bushes? being a purist can work to my anvantage to :p

I've caught quite a few smallmouths in Lake Washington with salmon smolt still sticking out of their throats and pulled them out to check out what they been eatting in mid spring, it happened to be baby sockeyes.

During a routine autopsy once a man's stomach was found to contain bits of baby cow,chicken embryo and fish flesh.

TO EAT!! Know a guy down in longview who for years either released or gave away every steelhead he caught. One day at a party he sampled some smoked fish he found to be delicious. When he inquired as to what it was he was told Steelhead!

I have caught alot of bass at lake Washington too. Are you sure they were not stickle backs or yellow perch? I havent caught any with salmon smolt stickin out of there gullet. That seems kinda a funny since salmon smolt are small enough that you would not see there tails. Crawdads are smallmouths favorite food anyways.
