Went out for over size sturgeon with Jon Ball on Sunday. The river was running extremely high but we managed to pick up four. Two that were about 8 feet and 2 in the 9 foot range. Pics will follow as soon as the uploader is fixed.

We went after peelers on Saturday and got three. Not a bad day, but no comparison to the SEVEN we caught the Saturday before.

The high water-flow made the fishing a little bit tough.

How did you like John?? He showed us the ropes on keepers last year, and now we are catching gators like crazy. He is a very good guide.

Jon's a great guide. We fished with him last year as well and look forward to fishing with him next year. He's one of the few full time guides and he's very free with information. We learned a lot fishing with him. For anyone who's interested, his website is here

How deeep are you all fishing for them right now. Typically we've been below Beacon Rock in about 90 feet of water. I've fished there probably 15 times but still don't have it down totally constistently. We usually get one or two but I am trying to find some more constent depths and methods. Email me if you have any inside info. Thanks.

We tried one spot upriver from Beacon Rock that was about 47 feet deep. We landed one there but the water was so high and fast that we couldn't hold the bottom with 3.5 pounds of lead. We moved down stream past Beacon Rock into the 80 foot range and were able to hold bottom with 32 oz and we landed 3 there.

Jacob,

Are you sure that your guide took you upstream of Beacon Rock??? eek Because it is clear in the regs (page 64) that Sturgeon fishing is CLOSED upstream of Beacon Rock from May 1 - July 15th. beathead

In the heavy current we try to anchor up just outside of the brutal currents in the shipping channel. We then send our weights out with our "dog" setup (another rod with a crabpot float and a downrigger clip) to the edge of the channel and let 'em go. We have been fishing in 65-90' of water. Last weekend it took 3-4 lbs of lead to keep a whole shad on the bottom.

But I guess that you can find these fish in any water. We just like deep water and big bait. It has worked well for us.

You're right. I checked our video again and it was below Beacon Rock.
