I was invited out for a neat trip today. My new friend Kevin asked me if I wanted to fish a secluded spot (not tellin' where) for lingcod, cabezon and black sea bass. We would be fishing from kayaks!

When I saw the weather report today for 8-12 foot seas, I was a bit nervous, but Kevin said to trust him, we would be fishing in a protected area. While the seas raged, this is what "our" water was like.

Kevin made all of the boats we were fishing out of, and I was pleased at how stable they were. Here is another shot of one of the other guys we fished with.

In all, we caught 4 lings and kept one, caught 8 black sea bass, and kept 3. We also had numerous hits and breakoffs from cabezon and bigger lings. I kept a 27" male for dinner tomorrow, and he wasn't too happy, as you can see from this picture. This is where my feet needed to be!

Finally, we landed after 4 hours of hard fishing, and a missed shot at a coyote running full bore on the beach. Here was the result of todays outing.

It was a great day on the water, and I was so sad to hear about the tragedy on Tillamook Bay. If you know where this is, please keep it to yourself. The area can't take much pressure. Thanks in advance.

Andy

Just wait until you have to bring a VERY ALIVE, blue meated, pissed off fish with big teeth into a very cramped boat with you! Then there is the part where you are getting towed around by the fish, and finally that fact you have to carry your boat a long ways before you can launch.

I know, not very extreme wink , but the title sounded good.

Too cool ... reminded me of a story that was just carried in the local paper here a few weeks back:

Web posted Friday, May 23, 2003

Angler lands 90-pound halibut from 14-foot kayak

KETCHIKAN (AP) ‹ Catching a 90-pound halibut in a 14-foot kayak can lead to quite a ride, says Howard McKim.

McKim was fishing from his kayak early Tuesday when he hooked the halibut near the northern end of the Tongass Narrows.

''It's a serious adrenaline rush,'' he said. ''I'm was shaking for long time on that one.''

McKim's fishing trip started at about 3 a.m. Tuesday when he paddled out aboard a sit-on-top kayak equipped with a fish finder and rod holders. After crossing Tongass Narrows, he began fishing for halibut in about 130 feet of water.

The halibut hit at about 7 a.m. It towed the kayak for several hundred yards at the pace of a fast paddle, said McKim. Then it dove ''straight for the bottom.''

McKim took about one-half hour to bring the 60-inch fish up to the kayak. He gaffed it, knocked it out, and eventually got it on the kayak's deck.

''There's just no better way to catch fish,'' he said later Tuesday morning.

why would you quit fishing to try and shoot a coyote . do they taste better than lings? why would you take a shot at something that your not eating and is not threatening you. do you just like to kill stuff? especially near water which is known for ricocheting bullets. bad ethics.... bad idea.

why should someone respect your request to keep this place quiet when it looks like you foks are the exact people that should not be out there. shooting at animals for no reason is extreem stoupidity not extreem fishing!!!

someday you will make the mistake of shooting at a dog that looks like a coyote. when this happens you will very likely be killed. I for one would not hesitate to fire back on you.

And you,in your head, are a better person than him when all you want to do is shoot andy?

Chappme--- You might reconsider your thought processes.

Dogfish also said this"Here is another shot of one of the other guys we fished with."

jerry garcia--- If I mis interpreted i am sorry. I have heard so much from fishermen about shooting cormorants or coyotes or mergansers while fishing that I thought they stopped to take a shot at the coyote. my fault

aunty em----- could you please quote that threat. guess i missed where i threatened anyone. i just sait that if myself or my pets come under fire I will shoot back... i doubt that you are any different.

i dont want to shoot anybody. i have had rifles leveled at my dog while wearing a hunter orange collar three times by people just like that, that thought they were shooting at a coyote. one guy was even dumb enough to say " oh I thought it was an elk" as he sat on his horse in the middle of a dirt road. I am just saying that the time will come when you screw up and its someones pet. at that time you are very likely to get the karma coming to you that you deserve for shooting animals that you dont intend to eat and are not shot for some type of protection ie shot to protect your stock or familly.

when I was a kid I shot a crow. when my grandfather found out about it that day, i was not allowed to leave the house till I ate it all. that may seem extreem to some of you but
looking back it was the proper lesson... god gave us what we need on this planet to survive. But it is a slap in the face of this planets creator to kill for no reason..... if that is ok why is snagging and dynamite fishing not ok? and spare me the ...well one is illegal and the other is not bull****.

yes I am getting down on him for taking a legal shot at a coyote for no reason other than entertainment... its the wrong thing to do and the wrong mentality for anyone to have.... If you want to try and inflict pain or death for entertainment try the ultimate fighting circuit...

It makes my day better when I see a coyote on the river bank or in my farm fields. you can not give me one good reason why he did that !!!
