I'm not sure whether we were the only private/sport boat out 40 miles fishing for tuna on Saturday but the only other boats I saw for miles were commercial tuna boats and a few draggers. We got into bait and tuna at 40 miles. We know much more about the fishery now and will try again in August. I think the bulk of the tuna were more than 50 miles out. The warmest the water got at 40 miles was 62 degrees.

The King fishing was great. We followed up our recent Neah Bay trip with two days of slamming kings off of Westport. We continued the winning streak from NB with the Wolverine spoons knocking em dead. The kings at Westport had huge 12" herring in their stomach and sometimes hanging out of their mouths. No silvers to speak of. I know some of the other posters on this board were there and some PSA members as well. Saturday was heaven out on the ocean but today was foggy and cool and somewhat rough. We heard some more bragging about big fish and it seemed for awhile we couldn't go 15 minutes without hearing about another 40# fish. Some of the 40's at the dock looked suspiciously like 25# fish though. A calibrated scale is nice.

The best part for me was that I was able to take someone out who not only hosted us all at his home in Westport but he got to catch a 33# King on his first ever trip out into the ocean. What a treat.

We managed one albacore tuna using a "zuchini" tuna clone trolled from a halibut rod. We also drug several hand-lines.

Got another on the water report today from Westport. A member of our group who stayed another day got limits of kings today with the 12 year old bagging the 41# fish. Lots of fish over 30# hit the docks today off the charters. Unbelieveable fishing.

Hello, Grampa2, I got your card that you stuck in my truck door! Never did get to say hi in person though.
On Saturday we got our kings but the biggest we could scratch out was about twenty-five, but of course we left many in the high teens and a few twenties loose, trying for another in the 40's. Well we stayed out until about 6 pm and then had to come in under the kicker, as the big one started up then just died. Sure was foggy, but thank goodness for a nice sea and incoming tide.
On Sunday morning I called my dealer and described the problem, he told me to remove the fuel pump and then take out the fuel regulater, it worked and we were able to start fishing at noon, but that was okay , because we had a great time caught our limit of 30 and 33 pounders and then released two 30 plus fish! Lots if Chumpies out there though and very few hatchery clipped silvers.

Steve..We hung around dock 17 for a bit on Sunday at around 3pm but as it was we didn't get home until 9:30pm. Spent the afternoon yesterday vacuum packing huge fillets. We brought shaved ice out for the fish wells and that sure was nice to ice the fish down on the water. Were you still running flashers and squid? We bailed on the herring and opted for some large spoons which worked real well. My hot spoon has taken on a new shape after being swallowed about 200 times.

YESTERDAY, I landed a 44# king & my fishin buddy got a 42# not a half hour later, big pigs

mine on a apex on the retrieve, his on a blue herring 18 pulls...

1 silver... fished from 11 to 1 pm & had to get home...

limited sat & sun, 3 & 3 each day (took 4 ever to get 3 hatchery coho, must have released 20+ natives) ... smallest king 23#, biggest 34#

never fished water deeper than 160'

GP2 what is a Wolverine spoon?have not heard of them before.

How many miles out past the bar are you having to run to find the Kings; is a 20 ft. boat large enough for the open water?

Right now, 8 to 10 miles out and yes if the CG has no restrictions a 20 footer should be just fine.
Know your way out before trying to cross the bar though, that sunken jetty has claimed many boats over time.
