Many fly patterns are made to represent smelt and they work. But I've never used real smelt though I have seen them in the bellies of coho.

Smelt is used more off the coast than the Sound. Even then, the herring and anchovy supply needs to be low before folks start buying it.

I see no reason why you couldn't use it. It is a main salmon forage here in the state. Inject it with some pro-cure...

In the South Sound the Coho gorge themselves on smelt.

II've been using smelt strips behind a hoochie this year and have done just as good on that as anything else I've used. If you know where to go to dip for them it's free bait and that can add up over time. I also use them for bottom fishing and crabbing.
