Saturday AM a string of events led to no mas pink mini hoochies to fish pinks with, so it was time to get creative. A few weeks back in the beginning of August I nailed my first Humpy of the year on a 4" glo squid with a green stripe and herring strip. So I rigged this up:

...and I am glad I did. Ever since this setup has caught pinks 4-1 over the standard pink squid and hotspot, fished at the same depths.

It is a challenger 2.5" squid green splatterback with a 3/0 red flourescent octopus gammy, and it's a humpy killa. This goes aginst the grain of what everyone tells you will catch pinks. It does have a dash of pink, but by far not the predominant color.

So, to add to this thread, tell us what you have found catches fish that wouldnt normally be considered a method to catch a particular species.

Thats why they call it fishing I guess!

Everytime I have been out the last couple weeks I always have one rod set up for silvers. I have actually caught more pinks on any silver gear (ie. killer's, spoons, hootchies) running 70 to 80' than the typical pink gear. I have also caught more silvers on the pink gear that was running 25 to 40'. Last Thursday we put about a 14lb silver in the boat at 3:30 running 25'!! Don't know what the heck is up with that??? Tell you what, that ho was a NICE surprise!! laugh

Now when I go out I am not using any typical pink gear. Although on one rod I have been runnin a white 11" hot spot and mixin' up gear behind it. The other two are staying typical ho gear. I want some more ho's to show! I am sick of humps already!

I was using a white flasher and pink hootchie on one rod, and a green flasher with a chartreuese/glo hootchie on the other. Both rods creamed fish.

I absolutely killed the pinks at Sekiu with a silver fishflash and a 4 inch army truck coyote spoon with prism tape on the underside - and I mean like to the tune of 32 for 8 people in 2 shifts before noon eek Caught a bunch of silvers too. Never have been a believer in the white dodger/pink squid combo for pinks - always figured it was something thought up by F&H to limit everyone's effectiveness rolleyes That combo never made sense to me, I mean pinks feed heavily on baitfish which is why they are paler than most salmon, so why does everyone go after them with a squid confused The ol' army truck with a flashy underside matches the herring hatch better than anything except the real thing, and when you are getting constant action re-baiting herring is a phenominal waste of time. Oh yeah, the other thing I did was use my B10 divers, the one's that re-set after being tripped, instead of the downrigger, so we could hook and lose or land fish and get back on them by just letting out line rather than cranking up the wire and re-clipping all the time. Hell, we got a bunch of fish on the surface before we could even let out any line with this rig. Dang, gave out too much good info beathead

If you keep fishing with your keys eventually they will get busted off by some big fish or something. What will you do then? Ha! You will have to walk all the way home from Humpy Hollow! wink

We caught mostly pinks out at Sekiu using cut-plugged herring and silver dodger combo. At first we tried a green splatter back with no luck. I'd try this at the Hallow.

Last season, I did a few experiments with 3" glow in the dark bass grubs and a single 6/0 or 7/0 hook. Worked pretty darn good..
Tried the double hook setup and didn't get as many hits... probably because the second hook killed the action of the tail...

I have also ran tubes and Sluggos with various results..

One I have been meaning to try with a spoon.... my Grandpa did this a couple times with herring

No flasher.. rig a big # 7 or 8 Colorado blade above a barrel swivel and run a spoon 4 or 5 feet behind that... seems to me it would work pretty good..

I've taken a #5 vibrex spinner and cut the hook off and tied on an 18" leader with cutplug flylined 50 - 100ft behind the boat. KILLER STRIKES on that setup. thumbs (Just the vibrex alone works very well also). Also small spoons trolled by themselves 15' down when the humpies are in thick. Have'nt caught a single humpie on white flasher and pink squid yet! Always on silver and king gear. confused
