WDFW is stepping up to the plate. New rules as of Sept. 1, fishermen on the lower Kalama,and the lower washougal rivers are limited to cast-and-retrieve gear . Rules state, both line and weight or lure must be moving at all times .Stationary baits and or lures are illegal. Don't think this will stop them all but it's a start.

I don't understand. How were they snagging the fish without the line and or lure moving ? I don't really want a clinic on snagging, just wonder how they are doing it without moving gear?

I have never been there but let me guess.It has to do with a large often black corkyk tied betweeen two hooks and a line bump??

I see this all the time on the samish, they throw lead head jigs with a few feathers tied to it and leave it on the bottom. then they wait for the fish to line (floss) itself. or slip sinkers a 6 to 8 inch leader and a bit of yarn same method,,,,DJ

Where did you see or hear that? I just looked at WDFW web site for any rule changes in September and I could not find any emergency rule change for the Kalama !

Cowlitzfisherman, found it in the Sept. edition of , The Reel News pg 12. www.thereelnews.com Don't think it will help much snagers aka: flossers or whatever you want to call it are going to keep doing it.Hope WDFW will enforce this .It's just another tool to write ya up if they think your snagging.

You will find the rule on page 35 at the top in the special rules for the Kalama.

Just had to look at this place for myself last Sunday on my way home from catching biting fish. The popular method used at the Kalama consists of a three way swivel with a foot of dropper line to a 1 ounce tear drop and about a 5' leader to appox 5/0 hook. A large corkie or two is then tied to the tag end of the bait loop. Standing shoulder to shoulder, they then cast out and let it SIT until they feel a line scrape, etc. Was their for about 15 minutes, which was long enough for about a 25 pounder that was hooked in the ventral fin to be netted and bonked. This was at Kamp Kalama in front of about 100 fisherman and spectators. What a joke!

It's a shame that there aren't enough ethical anglers there to tell those guys to stop that.

Several times in B.C. I have seen groups of anglers get on guys for either illegal or hard on the fish acts. Trouble, is if you are the only one in the crowd, it's pretty risky to speak up.

I once told two guys they should pick up the trash I saw them toss on the river bank. Thaye asked me if I wanted to get my *ss whipped. End of conversation.

I believe that h20 is was thinking the same thing I was.The snaggers have once again ruined it for the honest fishermen that would like to go plunk such water.

I do not believe that sticking up for the law is such a bad thing.I went down and fished a couple of our snag holes quietly this weekend and got the impression that there were more honest then not at these spots but the honest were just afraid to speak up.sad.once again the tail wags the dog.

What you think about using a video camera close up "In Your Face"?
It's legal you know; even for the guys shooting under the skirts in public.

This type of shooting is less bloody than lead.

Wheew. At least we can still go down there and use buzz bombs with a yank yank yank retrieve.

If they really want to stop snaggers they will have to close washington state to fishing.

It seems to me that the majority of the snagging that goes on in this state is at the spots the fish stack up.Where would these places be?mostly infront of hatcheries.Especialy for steelhead.

Wouldnt have been more effective to make it plunking only?? Not that I would have liked that any better but it seems that would do more to cut down on the snagging.

This is a silly rule that will keep some oldtimers from the only way they can fish- plunking. The answer is educating judges, who often see fishing infractions as petty and no big deal, and to raise the fine for intentional snagging to at least $1,000.00

Maybe if we got all enforcment ticket revenue to go to the WDFD they could afford enough game wardens to patrol.

Also the WDFW needs to do a better job of prioritizing. The other day my buddy and I were checked on Lake Washnigton, up by Kenmore. There were almost no other fishermen around and given the relativly wide open rules there, i.e. no limit on perch, no gear restriction, there was littel liklyhood they would find an infraction. Why weren't they out patroling known snaging locals?
