The banana thread got my friends and I talking about all the goofy things folks beleive about fishing that are simply not true. Things like "Jumping fish don't bite" Have you got any examples?

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

Yeah.
If you're using a three foot leader, your lead will have to travel 6 feet before you feel the bite.
Uh huh.....if you're in a coma maybe.

Cutting open a fish tells you what bait to use.
Wrong, it will only tell you what the fish will eat not what the fish wants to eat. The stomach contents are an indication of what food is readily available but remember fish have excellent digestive systems, & most soft-bodied animals consumed will be unrecognisable. This is why cod always seem to be stuffed with crabs, shrimp and the odd small half digested fish. The most available food is not always the fishes first choice. Fish will seek out prey that is easy to catch, has a higher nutritional value or is simply tastier. What is the point of always using a bait which is in abundace anyway?

For my kids it was always, "I won't need any raingear, it's not gonna rain."
For me it was always, "Just one more cast and then we'll head home."

Guaranteed way to get a fish to hit-- all you have to do is to take a pee. About the time you start, BAM, fish on!
Make sure you announce your intentions just before you start. It seems to help.

ten of my favorites:
1. Barbless hooks; "I would never have lost that fish if i wasn't for these blasted barbless hooks!"
2. Beginners Luck; Not that beginners don't have it, but that experts don't need it.
3. Kings are on the bottom and at least 100' down, silvers are on top and not deeper than 60'.
4. Humpies only hit pink.
5. Dogfish only hit bait.
6. Steelhead won't take a dry fly.
7. Steelhead won't bite when livestock are resting and chewing their cud. (for real)
8. I don't need no stinking life jacket.
9. It's no problem, you can hitch a ride from Leyendecker's back to the Hatchery easy. (any turnaround applies)
10. And my all time favorite: the "Black Box"

I love this one when wild steelhead are upstream, past the tribal nets " If I don't kill it the Indians will"
2. "Bright day bright fly, dark day, dark fly"

No point in releasing fish, cuz the indians will just get them anyways.
Always keep your pole tip as high as possible when drifting.
Bobbers are for sissys.
A 4/0 hook is always better than a 1/0.
Cast upstream 100yards, the guy next to you won't mind.
If you don't use the Bill Dance hookset, you won't catch any fish.
Listen to the guys on the river, not the regulations booklet.
I'm not catching anything, so that means the fishing sucks.
Buzzbombs work great in 10 feet of water.
Gamikatsu's are the best hooks.

"You have to be on the water at O dark thirty to catch any fish"
When I was younger my best friend and I thought we had to moon the fish to catch anything.

I think the biggest "TRUTH" to fishing is:
- The right presentation will catch more fish than the right lure/bait

When tossing bait - 16 wraps in the baitloop. When tossing a pink worm - 7 wraps in the baitloop.
Red jigs catch bigger fish.
Procure wizard lava orange.
Steelhead eggs won't catch steelhead. Silver eggs won't catch silvers, etc....
For silvers I have to wear my black lamiglas hat. For kings I wear no hat. For steelhead I wear my cougar stocking cap or my red cougar hat.
Size 2 owner hooks - black
bead below my corky.
Now I can fish effectively

Corky color matters when fishing terminal salmon hatchery areas. Braided line breaks off in big chunks and screws up a lot of good drift water. If it's hooked from the gill plates forward, it's a legal fish. You need a net to land fish on gradually sloping gravel bars. Fish know what fishing line is. You need a stiff rod if you want to catch hens. (OK, that one IS mostly true! )

That's why I included that one. To the best of my knowledge, it never was in the regs pamphlet, at least not worded that way. I am to this day still amazed at how many people think that it is. I have my personal opinion as to why that particular "myth" is so widespread, especially on rivers during the fall salmon runs, but I don't want to start a big pissing match over it so I won't say anymore. If it's not a myth, then I guess it's probably best that the state game Wardens and the Municipal courts sort the issue out, and save Bob a lot of bandwidth here.

1. MSY/MSH 2. All fly fishers are snobs 3. All gear fishers are "bubbas" 4. Majority of anglers are working issues or actually taking action that will benefit wild fish 5. There are no true wild fish left 6. All hatchery fish are evil

Here's a few
1. Black guys dont fish cause most of them can't swim! 2. Here's my buddies favorite "Salmon don't bite in the mouth of the Puyallup". 3. Trolling the clay banks to slag pile sucks 4. Fishflashers don't work in the Sound! 5. There's nothing but dogfish in the sound! 6. Always add 3 lbs to the fish since it was weighed after the guts were removed!

Kore,
Good one. Never dared to stretch a few hours into 8. Hope you caught some fish.
I have always had the policy that if you're going to get in trouble, you might as well make it worth the trouble.
