I am taking my boy out to the penninsula this weekend to try to talk some salmon into biting our lines and do some camping (in the rain most likely).
Last weekend we fished the hoh. It sounds like with the recent rain the hoh might be high and muddy so I am thinking that we might need to goto one of the other rivers in the area.
The Bog looked very nice crossing where it crosses 101 last weekend, but I am not sure where to access it (wading).
I assume that all of the rivers will have salmon in them right now because of the fish that we saw jumping in the hoh last weekend. Anyone willing to give a newbie salmon guy advise on where to fish and maybe what to use?

I have hooked up on SolDuc coho with just using large spoons and spinners. Cast them ahead of likely looking holes / pools, and let them swing across, and BAM! The key is to get the lure deep enough, just off thebottom. What I am going to try this year is this setup I heard from a guide: Attach a sliding dropper weight to the mainline, maybe 1/2 oz or whatever for the conditions, then a swivel, then a long leader with a Dicky Spoon. Good luck, let us know how you do. We are going that way this weekend too.

I like the sliding sinker approach - more like walleye fishing...you can feel the nibbles better. I am having a hard time finding a store in seattle that still has the 50/50 DN's in stock. I know that there is more to salmon fishing than I have picked up so far, but so far, it seems like the fish of a 1000 casts to me (I have never fished muskie though!)

We picked some 50/50 DN's at Outdoor Emporium last week, but don't know if they still have any. Me thinks Steelhead fish of a thousand casts! But if the coho are inthe river, I think your chances are pretty good. When they are stacked up in a hole you can see and hear 'em finning and jumping.

Thanks - I will check on my way home in (hopefully) 2 hours.
You use the real small ones right?

We didn't do very well. The mouth of the Hoh was running fast on saturday and was really fast sunday.
The Bogi was brown and we didn't get any fish.
The sol was okay sunday till around 3. Couldn't get into the hole I wanted. Some kids were doing okay drifting floats and eggs thru the hole - nothing big tho. A few fish moving thru, but not too many taking the bait.
The Quill was high and brown on Sunday.
We thru almost everything at them, but came home without fish. It was nice to get away from the city though.

Fished the Solduc Friday just before all the nasty weather started. River was not as high as I expected, but it at least had some color. Was expecting to catch silvers, but instead ended up hooking and landing two hatchery summer runs. Quite a few silvers rolling, but couldn't get them to cooperate. Also, hit the Calawah for a little while and there are still quite a few stale summer runs around, but I think they've seen it all and I couldn't get them to cooperate either. Next time I guess.

Griz, on Saturday we found the 'Duc too low for the boat where we were, upper 'Duc close to the hatchery, but from the bank we managed about a 15# that was pretty dark, and a nice brite jack, both of which we C&R'd. You know the rest of the story, Sunday morning the river was punched. FYI we caight both fish on Gold hammered teardrop spoons.
