I was sick almost every day for 4 years down there watching the thousands upon thousands of wild salmon and steelhead being taken from that river and sold for .10$ a pound of used for halibut bait. I remember in spring of 2000 when we had that low water and they just raped the wild steelhead run. I also remember walking into the Seafood plant that april one night seeing 4,500 wild steelhead frozen in piles with heads and tails cutt off that were not sold as there was no market. The fish plant worker that was there that night went on to tell me how many fish there were and that they would be used for halibut bait as they were all freezer burnt anyways. I remember getting bashed by someone from WDFW on this board when I contested the number of wild steelhead which were reported to be harvested that winter on the Quiluete System by treaty fisheries. I remember he posted that only 1400 or so wild steehead were harvested that winter when I knew there were many more than that. 4,500 were only the fish caught in March and April. And that 4,500 were the ones that couldnt be sold and actually went through the fish plant. Many of the fisherman go through other buyers for a higher price or sell off of the bank. And that year they had a very high percentage of wild fish caught in the early part of the run. Who knows how many wild fish were really harvested.

I am pretty sure it was the spring of 2001 and not 2000.
I gues the year isnt that important as this crap goes on every year.
Another thing people might fisnd interesting.
I saw time after time when Queets and Hoh fisherman came up to La Push to sell fish they had netted on the days they are not suposed to be fishing. I have personally had the buyer tell me that they come and sell him fish that they had poached at night on closed days. He actually told me that the Queets fisherman have to be extra sneeky as they are watched a little closer.

That's the normal pattern on the Quillayute from what I remember and yeah, it always sucks.
The thing that really, really sucks is that anytime they want to they can have a ceremonial fishery and take what they want as opposed to what they need. I am not a big Indian basher by any means but the way the Quillayutes manage their fishery is appalling, IMO.

All I have to add is that the ONLY reason certain fisheries haven't totally collapsed on the westside rivers is that you can't gillnet when the rivers are blown. The ONLY reason. If a collapse does happen it won't be because of gillnetting...OH NO .... it must be due to some environmental reason, or logging The way that certain tribes behaved during the drought we had over there in years past was appalling. Using jet boats to herd trapped salmon into gillnets. DISGUSTING I will stop now before I blow a blood vessel Not much you can do about it except for venting...But venting feels so good sometimes aaaaaaahhhhhhh venting

The premise of this thread was that they get days to "make up" for days lost due to high water. I have been unable to find where the information about additional days, unscheduled days is located.
Are the nets going to be in this weekend?

Hey Gutz, Why don't you find out from the source. Call the Quileute fisheries director, Mel Moon, 360-374-5695, fax 360-374-9250 or email quileute@olypen.com Here's a great resource for all your Quil info. www.goia.wa.gov/directory/pdf/quileu.pdf Let us know what you find out!

so if these fisha managers and the wdfg arent gonna do nothing about the flagrant netting at night, lets jus try to get a intiative going, including: people with cameras watching them net, hoodsport chums, the queets, and at night...im sure alot of us on this board would be willing to spend the money to get a commercial going? i looked it up and its only 5 dollars to get the intiative process rollng..someone who can word better than me, and then send it in and if it gets approved, walaa its on the ballots..show some nasty coverage of netting and i know the public wouldnt support that anymore..

Nothing is ever gonna change. They do whatever they want and the government entities look the other way. Its they way it has always been and its the way it will always be.
As has been said on here before the I believe the state has alot more power on these issues than they let on but their policy has been to just take the tribes word for it in all situations.
The only thing I could see changing anything is if we get a conservative govenor that is a sport fisherman.
Its funny all states in the 9th district court fall under the bolt decision but Washington is the only one that is so liberal with the tribes when it comes to fish and game.
I think Washington is the only state that allows the comercial harvest of steelhead under the Boldt Decision.
