I am considering buying one of these reels. Any feedback/opinions out there as to its reliability, castability, backlashing problems?

Any info would be appreciated. thanks

I have fished with one for about 3 years now. its a great river reel, it has a very smooth drag,
I rate its casting above most but less then a calcutta. so depends what your going to use it for, drifting eggs its great, tossing spoons and spinners its good....DJ

One of the worse reels that i've owned frown . Drag not smooth and casting button sticks and does not always fully engauge. laugh Even had it pro cleaned and still had problems. Never have had any problems with other shimano reels. Maybe this one is the exception but I would consider a curado if I was going to by shimano baitcaster. thumbs

Wow Im suprised, I have lots of shimano reels and I like the calyx for egg drifting. its caught hundreds of fish and never had any problems,

the catala is a round reel that is below a hundred $ that isnt bad, I use one for jigging spoons for kings

Hey DJFISHS2XS,

What model of the Calyx do you have? I generally see the CYX-200 and the CYX-100 on the market.

I plan to use the reel for drifting eggs, and maybe tossing some hardware like spoons for steelhead and salmon (but not kings). So, I generally don't need a reel with a large line capacity (maybe 150-200 yards max for 12 lb test). And the reel has to be able to cast 1- inch pencil lead easily/smoothly with minimal backlash problems.

My biggest problem is that I am still learning how to use a baitcaster properly, and I'm getting too much backlash on the Abu I have now (it's a bit too big for drifing eggs and so has trouble with the light weights).

I am looking at an Abu 5500C3 as well, and maybe a Curado if the price is right.

mine a 100 I use it for kings on the samish, its a small river with not much room for the fish to run and little current., the drag has always worked well. I do clean my reels often....

some of these reels are 10-20 years old and still work like new, the calyx is 4th from the right (note the egg stain on the rod handle) they are all shimano, I have other reels some penns and a few okumas but the shimanos are my favorite. the 3 reels on the fence were sent in to shimano because 2 of them are corsairs and the other is a calcutta that keeps eating the worm gear for the level wind. I already got a new calcutta back. awaiting for the corsairs (back order). I took this photo and placed my trouble report for the calcutta on it and printed it and enclosed all 3 reels they got the calcutta back with in 9 days and the well ship the corsairs asap....and for some reason it didnt cost me a thing.....DJ

PS....The green reels are from my bass tourny days I only fish bass now in the spring, I became a jig pitcher and just cant fish much else for bass. the size of fish I catch on jigs make it worth the trips that I dont catch the high numbers that I used to catch.....
