Anyone ever wonder if fish are put off by the smell of cigarette smoke on lures? Or maybe it's a good thing?

Don't touch the stuff myself, but fish can smell things far beyond our ability to measure, and I routinely use either scent or bait to cover up my natural predatory stink.

Smoking while fishing causes other problems with catching fish. A freind and I were fishing the Poo years ago on a muddy slow day. He was a smoker and had just lit one up and stuck it in his mug when he had a bite and set the hook. The line hit the lit end, it burnt it a little bit, and it snapped on the first run. We then proceeded to observe a 20+ pound steelie jump all over the river trying to throw the hook and line eek Only bite all day beathead Yes, he quit smoking while fishing :p

Steelies love Coppehagen scent. Spit it on my bait before every cast. (yea, about as much as my wife likes it)

I have no idea whether or not fish care about scent.....I used to drop my jigs into my gas/oil mix and never was able to tell whether or not it reduced the number of fish I caught vs. the number of fish my pard caught. Watched a video one time on trolling flies. Camera was lowered to watch the response of salmon following two flies.....one soaked in the oily bilge water and one kept clean....while the fish would make many passes at the two flies, they inevitably struck the oiled fly much sooner.

Biggest trout caught on a hike-in trip to Victoria Lake years ago was caught by me on a cigarette filter tied to resemble a streamer after having lost all my traditional flies on back casts against the steep rocky banks...was 20 in rainbow.

I smoke and my punch card doesn't suffer.

I think sight/movement has more to do with catching fish than scent. Ive caught steelhead with 4 day old whitish/black stanky sandshrimp, and jigs that were rolled on by a dog. A buddy of mine smokes like a chimney and has no problem hooking up.

Im not saying that scent plays no factor, but it is over-emphasized big time... my 2 cents

Hey Charr, um since Copenhagen isn't as good as Kodiak, would kodiak work better? J/K. laugh

Are you serious about that? I have had a lingering superstition that states: YOU will not hook up with a fatty untill you pack a fatty. Weird but i forget to pack one, no fish, then when i do, wham, i start seeing crome. confused laugh

I am not sure it may depend on the type of fish. I am not a smoker but do chew snoose. When I was 11 I went fishing in a small lake east of auburn lake moneysmith. We were fishing for catfish and perch. We had probably caught about 100 fish when my friends dad threw his butt in the water and a catfish came up and ate it. I scrounged up a butt from the bottom of the boat and put it on my hook and proceeded to catch fish after fish it worked just as good as the worms we had been using. Who would of figured that.

Scent is important, but in my experience and smoking preference......cigars, there is no positive or negative. I've seen WD-40 do magic, but my stogie had no effect. The nice thing about cigars is that they keep mosquitos away. cool

One of the alltime funny things I have seen while fishing was: I seen a extreamly drunk and obnoxious guy fishing off the beach in maryland that had this huge surf pole and was smoking a cigar, we were all fishing for bluefish and he happened to hook up with a big old skate. he was one of the guys who reel a spincasting reel upside down (reel up) and backwords. he pumped the rod up and the cigar hit that 30 pound line, boom it sounded just like a 22 rifle going off. the guys grabs his forhead and blood starts to trickle. it put a nice gash on his forhead..... its a little off topic but shows the true meaning of Karma

just dont throw your butts in the water. the filters open up and resemble drifting rags. you can find these cig butts inside the stomachs of steelies. keep your trash inside your boat. i bet atleast 90% of the smoking fishermen out there litter their cig butts into the river. why disrespect the river like that? instead of just throwing them away at the end of the day. I know that many people reading this thread do this daily on the river, is there a good reason that you do this?

Got to back up lupo here, a lot of people that smoke seem to think it's just fine to pitch your butts where ever you please - I've even had people dump their ashtrays on my asphalt driveway right in front of my house! It's not ok to litter, and cig filters are litter just the same as McDonalds wrappers. Sorry for the rant but I hate garbage on the rivers and pick it up - yes, even the gross cig butts that have been stuck in someones unsanitary mug - although I cringe when I do it eek

Washington state is the worst state for garbage being left behind that I have seen - (MT, CO, WY, NE, MA, PA, ND - I have been a few places). My son and I take home a garbage bag full of the crap that others have left behind....

oh ya, when I do smoke, I dip the cherry in the water and stick the butt in my pocket.

FFF, I know most people won't believe it, but I really do believe I've hooked more fish with the smell of Coppenhagen or Kodiak on my fingers. Maybe it's masking my human scent.
