this is my first post on this site, this is an excellent site and i have learned alot for reading all the posts. my question is this . I purchased some pink worms in 6 1/2" length, however since I bought these i have been doing a lot of reading on pink worm fishing and what i noticed was most people are using 4 1/2" worms ! will it really make a difference ? I am going to fish these on a 1/8 oz jig with a stinger hook. thanks for any info you can provide...

Welcome. You could always cut 2 inches off. In fact, some people use worms even shorter. I suggest trying it, and shortening the worms if needed.

The bigger worm will work well in higher Colored water, Even though I have caught lots of steelies on the 61/2 inch in low clear conditions too, I like to thread it on my line with a single hook!

Ditto on threading it on the line. You can get these really long worm threaders that come in 2 packs at GI joes that work great. I use 6 inchers exclusively. Last year, when I really began experimenting with the pinky, I actually did better on the longer ones when drift fishing. When float fishing, I use the little thumpers made by seducer. Smaller worms on a jig head will result in more hook ups I believe. I remember getting takedowns while fishing with the worm under a float last year and coming up emptyhanded. As soon as I went to about 3" on the jighead, problem solved. However, I like it 20 times better when drifted. So do the fish

I use Yamamoto brand pink worms in either 3 or 4 inch size. Others use Berkley worms, some have embedded scent, and there are lots of other brands with different tail configurations, etc. I havent done enough testing to determine that one brand works better than another.

I thread a #2 hook thru about 2/3 of the length of the worm so as to leave a "tail". I always put a float in front of the worm and most often use a little scent on the float -- anise, shrimp, egg, etc.

Are those threaders the ones that slide the worm up the hook or pull the line through the worm?

Also, how do you keep the worm from sliding back down the line and bunching up on the hook?

The threaders I use are by procure and come in a yellow long ziploc bag. They come in packs of two. To answer your question, they do both (slide the line through and slide the worm on the line). It's really hard to explain but I could show you pretty easily first hand if you want to meet for 5 minutes at the highway 512 mcdonalds (I drive by there everyday and seeing you're from spanaway, it would be an easy place to connect). I put a bead above my hook before sliding the worm onto the leader. Unfortunately, the bead doesn't COMPLETELY hinder the worm from sliding down but it helps. I usually go through a pack an outing (but that's some hard fishing too).

Thanks Cuttie. I'll look for the Procure package; that should explain everything. I thought I had read somewhere about using a bead above the hook. That confirms it, and makes great sense.

I'm going to try and hit the OP on Saturday and give them a try. We've got a big exercise going on and paranoia is setting in with the powers-that-be, so we may have to work this weekend. But if I'm free and you'd like to come along you're more than welcomed.
