The megathread on the Commission's decision on this board and others led me to think that there was a disconnect between what we believe to be catch rates and the reality. Please don't look up the answer, tell me what percentage of kept steelhead you think are caught by the tribes and what percentage is caught by Sports Fishers. The year in question is 2001-2002 (the most current data).

Eddie,
Do you mean in the rivers where both harvest, or statewide harvest? Wild, hatchery, or both?
Fish on...

My wild and hatchery guess:
Tribes: 53,454 = 21.7% Sport: 187,260 = 78.3% Total: 240,714 = 100%
That would be from 20-30%
Myself: 3 = 0.0012% Now that is some serious resource pillaging.

Plunker, your numbers are correct. Polls such as this are unscientific at best yet it may be somewhat instructive. It did show what I originally thought. About 75% of people who voted believed that the tribes had a much higher catch than actuals. I wish we had a better way to see how many wild fish were in the tribal catch but I think that this may show that we as a community need to have more facts and less emotion when we talk about catch rates.

Geeze Eddie, please do us a favor and spend a few weeks in LaPush to rid yourself of such ignorance when it come to tribal reporting of steelhead catch. I have and I can tell you those numbers are way low! Talk to Rich G. for a reality check. Don't believe the "paper" fish counts!

Captain, I recognize that the numbers that are reported (by both sides) are suspect at best. However, those are the only ones we've got. So, how do we apply any kind of science to this problem?

Guys,
Don't forget that we're talking STATEWIDE here. Two thirds of the state doesn't even have tribal fishing...
Fish on...
